xAI and SpaceX join forces: Musk finds a way around OpenAI

Elon Musk is moving into an aggressive phase of the AI model wars. Rumor has it that xAI may merge with SpaceX, creating a unique technology conglomerate. Why does it matter? First, SpaceX offers a vast stream of data from Starlink and a deep pool of engineering talent. Second, investors are more willing to put money behind space-scale ambitions than behind yet another LLM. That is bad news for OpenAI and Anthropic. While they hunt for chips, Musk is building a vertically integrated empire in which AI controls the hardware and the hardware feeds the AI with data. This is no longer just a software race but a fight for control of the infrastructure of the future.

Elon Musk has never been good at playing by the rules, and his latest maneuver with xAI confirms it. While Sam Altman and Dario Amodei try to negotiate compute discounts with cloud giants, Musk is tackling the problem radically. The idea of merging xAI with SpaceX is not just a financial reshuffle but an attempt to build a closed ecosystem in which artificial intelligence gets direct access to the physical world and to colossal volumes of data. In an industry where every byte of quality data counts, Musk is tapping a bottomless well of information.

To grasp the scale of the threat, it helps to recall how xAI began. Musk launched it as a response to a "woke" OpenAI, but quickly realized that data from the social network X alone was not enough to win. His competitors had pulled far ahead, backed by billions from Microsoft and Google. But Musk holds a card nobody else in Silicon Valley has: SpaceX. The company does not merely launch rockets; it owns the largest satellite constellation in human history. That gives xAI not only global connectivity but also the chance to train models on data that earthbound data centers cannot reach.

What does the alliance mean in terms of human capital? First and foremost, it is a question of engineering culture. SpaceX engineers are used to working under harsh physical constraints. Bringing that experience into xAI could speed up Grok's development to a pace classic software companies never dreamed of. Musk has always preached "first principles thinking," and merging the teams would let him apply that approach to AI at a new level. When your developers understand both how to train transformers and how to calculate orbital mechanics, they come up with solutions that cannot be copied.

Nor should money be forgotten. Investors adore SpaceX. It is one of the most valuable private companies in the world, with a clear business model and government contracts. Tying xAI to the space giant makes the startup far more attractive to large pools of capital. It lets Musk bypass traditional venture rounds and raise funds on terms he dictates himself. OpenAI, for all its popularity, remains hostage to its relationship with Microsoft, which creates certain long-term risks. Musk, meanwhile, is building a financially independent fortress.

For Anthropic and OpenAI, this means the war is moving to a new level: vertical integration. If we used to argue about the number of parameters in a model, the question now is different: who has more control over the physical hardware and the sources of primary data? Musk is building an empire in which Tesla supplies robots and autopilot, X provides social context, and SpaceX provides global communications infrastructure. In this scheme, xAI becomes the central "brain" that ties everything together. It is a classic Musk move: create a problem for competitors in a place where they never planned to fight.

Of course, such a union carries risks. Regulators may take an interest in the concentration of resources in one pair of hands, and shareholders of Musk's other companies may ask why they were left out. But little has stopped Musk before. He is betting that in the future AI will not be able to exist detached from physical reality. And if he is right, OpenAI will soon discover that it is building a very smart chatbot while its rival builds an operating system for an entire civilization. This clash between software and infrastructure will become the main story of the coming years.

The bottom line: The era of pure software AI startups is ending. Now the winner is whoever has their own rockets, satellites and factories. Can OpenAI find its own "physical" anchor before Musk monopolizes data from space?
