Canva rebuilds its product around AI to defend a $42 billion business
Canva has unveiled AI 2.0, the biggest product relaunch since its founding. The company is moving the service away from template-based design toward an AI interface that builds presentations, spreadsheets and campaigns from a single prompt, remembers your brand and connects to Slack, Gmail and Zoom. For Canva, this is more than a new feature. It is an effort to defend a $42 billion business in the age of generative AI.

On April 16, 2026, Canva introduced Canva AI 2.0, the largest product overhaul in its history. The Australian company is trying to prove that, in the age of generative AI, it will remain not a convenient template editor but a full working platform for creating content.
Why Canva is changing
The stakes are high: Canva is valued at $42 billion after an employee share sale in August 2025, and the market keeps asking the same question: will general-purpose chatbots and image generators eat it alive? For now, the business is still growing. According to the company, at the end of 2025 it had more than 265 million monthly active users, over 31 million paying users and $4 billion in annualized subscription revenue. The enterprise segment, covering teams of 25 or more seats, also doubled and reached $500 million in ARR.
At that scale, simply adding a few AI buttons is no longer enough. The new launch is not a cosmetic update but an attempt to change the product's entry point. Before, users came to Canva for a template, a presentation or an image, and switched on AI tools on top of the familiar interface if needed. Now the company wants work to start with a conversation: you describe the task, and the system assembles the result, picks the tools and takes the layout to its final state. According to management, the rebuild took more than two years, and Bloomberg calls the shift a risky transformation for the entire company.
What was shown at the launch
The core idea of Canva AI 2.0 is to move away from the blank canvas and the template start. A user can ask for, say, a multi-page presentation, a marketing campaign or a working spreadsheet, and the system builds a first version straight away in editable form. One key point: the output is not a "baked-in" image. Elements are created in layers, so you can change headlines, images, fonts and blocks separately without breaking the whole composition. The platform also pulls context from brand materials and connected work services.
- Conversational design creation from text, a brief, a draft or a sketch
- Layered generation, where every object stays editable
- Connectors to Slack, Gmail, Notion, Zoom and other work services
- Background web research and scheduled tasks
- Canva Code 2.0 and Sheets AI for interactive mini-products and spreadsheets
Canva also added persistent memory of working style and brand. The idea is that the AI should remember brand colors, fonts, presentation format and past edits, rather than starting every new request from scratch. This matters most for teams that produce similar presentations, emails and marketing materials every day.
For now, Canva AI 2.0 is available as a research preview, and the company promises a broader launch in the weeks after the announcement.
What the bet rests on
To avoid depending only on other companies' models, Canva is actively buying and integrating AI teams. In 2024 it acquired Leonardo.Ai, and on April 9, 2026 it announced the acquisitions of Simtheory and Ortto, platforms for agentic workflows and marketing automation. At the same time, the company is building its own infrastructure and says its AI services already run seven times faster and cost 30 times less than comparable frontier models. For a product with hundreds of millions of users, the economics matter as much as generation quality.
"We are becoming an AI platform with a set of design tools," is how
Canva COO Cliff Obrecht described the company's new course.
That line shows Canva is now competing with more than Adobe. It has to hold its ground on several fronts at once: against specialized creative suites, against general-purpose AI assistants, and against the risk of turning into a bloated all-in-one tool. The company is already seeing traffic growth from LLM interfaces: by its own figures, by October 2025 users had held more than 26 million conversations with the Canva app inside ChatGPT. Separately, the company is working to appear more often in ChatGPT and Claude answers as an entry point for content creation.
What this means
Canva is trying to become not just another image generator but an operating system for creative work. If the idea works, users will do not only design in a single window but also research, drafts, code, publishing and updates to brand materials. If it does not, the market will quickly remind it that in the age of generative AI, even a giant audience does not guarantee protection from reinvention.
