Meta AI in Facebook Marketplace can now draft replies to buyers on a seller's behalf
Facebook Marketplace has launched AI auto-replies: sellers can let Meta AI draft answers to buyers' questions about price, availability and pickup terms. The AI pulls data from the listing and suggests ready-made text, which the seller reviews and sends. The feature takes the routine off people who run several listings and are tired of answering the same questions dozens of times a day. *Meta is designated an extremist organization and banned in Russia.

Facebook Marketplace has added a new AI-based feature: sellers can now enable Meta AI to automatically draft replies to buyers' questions. The AI uses data from the listing — the item description, price, pickup location and availability status — and generates a ready-made reply to standard queries such as "Is this still available?" or "Is there any room on the price?"
Here is how it works. When a potential buyer messages a seller and asks about availability or the terms of the deal, Meta AI analyzes the content of the listing and automatically suggests a draft reply. The seller only needs to read the suggested text and tap "Send" — or edit it as they see fit. The feature does not send messages without confirmation: the decision always rests with a person.
The system has limits worth understanding. The model does not generate information on its own — it relies solely on the data the seller has already entered in the listing: the description, price, pickup terms, and whether the price is negotiable. If a listing is sparsely filled out, the drafts will be correspondingly limited. The system works as a smart editor that turns structured listing data into a coherent reply to the buyer, not as an independent agent with its own knowledge of the item.
Facebook Marketplace is one of the largest C2C commerce platforms in the world. According to Meta, more than a billion people use it every month. For sellers of popular items, that means dozens of near-identical messages a day — the same questions about price, condition and handover method. Answering each one is tedious routine, especially for sellers running several listings at once. Automatic drafts are genuinely valuable in exactly these scenarios.
The feature fits Meta's systematic strategy of building AI into every product in its ecosystem. Meta AI is already present in Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram and Ray-Ban smart glasses. The company is steadily moving toward a model in which the AI assistant becomes a permanent background layer in every interaction with the platform — from finding content to completing transactions. Marketplace, with its structured data and predictable conversation patterns, is a convenient testing ground for this approach.
This is not the first AI tool Meta has rolled out for sellers on the platform. The company previously tested automatic filling of listing fields from a photo: you upload a picture and the system suggests a title, category and attributes. Auto-replies logically extend that functionality: the AI now takes part not only in creating a listing but also in the negotiation process. The next step, presumably, will be more proactive scenarios — automatic counteroffers, clarifying questions, and tracking the status of a deal.
Transparency for buyers is a separate question. Meta has not yet said whether the conversation will show a label indicating that a reply was written with the help of AI. Across its other products the company takes different approaches: in some cases Meta AI is clearly visible, in others it works in the background. How AI assistance will be labeled on Marketplace is an important question for user trust.
In the competitive market for commerce platforms, automation is becoming a key differentiator. eBay is building ChatGPT-based tools into listing creation, and Amazon is experimenting with AI-generated product descriptions. The C2C segment long stayed out of this trend — now Facebook Marketplace is actively catching up. Auto-replies are one more step toward a platform that acts as a smart intermediary, taking on the routine while people make the final decisions.
