Meta is bringing generative AI to shopping on Instagram and Facebook so users can get richer information about products and brands inside the apps, without clicking through to external sites. The company uses generative AI to display detailed product descriptions, brand information, and product specs while people browse. Users will be able to ask questions about products they're interested in and get answers in real time. The idea is to remove the friction between discovering a product and buying it: the fewer reasons people have to leave the app in search of information, the more likely the transaction happens inside Meta's ecosystem.
For sellers, this means a significantly lighter operational load. Today, retailers have to write descriptions for every item in their Facebook Commerce catalogs by hand, a tedious and expensive job for large inventories. Generative AI will be able to enrich those descriptions automatically: adding details, generating answers to common customer questions, and structuring information for a specific audience. Small businesses get capabilities that used to require a dedicated copywriter or content manager.
It's a strategically important move for Meta. The company has spent several years building commerce infrastructure inside its apps. Instagram added shopping tabs, product tags, and buy buttons in Stories. Facebook Marketplace has grown into one of the largest marketplaces in the world, with hundreds of millions of active listings. Even so, conversion has remained a weak spot: users would leave to google product specs or read reviews on other sites, and often finished the purchase there, with a competitor.
The generative AI approach is a direct response to that problem. If the system can immediately explain a fabric's composition, compare models, or suggest cheaper alternatives, users stay in the app longer. That raises both the likelihood of a purchase and the value of Meta's ad inventory, the company's main source of revenue.
Competition in social commerce is fierce. Amazon uses AI to summarize reviews and automatically answer product questions. TikTok Shop has grown into a serious player in the US and European markets in two years, betting on native content and livestream selling. Google has built AI summaries directly into search results. Meta moved more cautiously than its rivals on AI shopping, and now it's catching up.
The potential scale is enormous. Instagram has more than two billion monthly active users, and Facebook has more than three billion. Analysts forecast that global social commerce will exceed a trillion dollars in the coming years. Even a small improvement in conversion across the shopping surfaces of these two platforms translates into billions in additional revenue.
Specific details haven't been disclosed yet: it's unclear whether the AI will appear as a separate block or be built directly into the product listing. A lot depends on how deep the personalization goes, meaning how accurately the system can account for each individual user's browsing history and preferences.
Generative AI in shopping is Meta's attempt to close the full purchase loop inside a single app: discovering a product through the algorithm, researching it with an AI assistant, and buying it through built-in checkout. If this works at the necessary scale, Instagram and Facebook will stop being just a traffic source for online stores and become full-fledged, next-generation commerce platforms.
