Lawyers Panic as Anthropic's New Tool Hammers Europe's Information Giants

Anthropic has decided law is an ideal target for Claude and released a specialized tool for in-house counsel. The market reacted with instant panic: shares of European giants Relx (-11%), Wolters Kluwer (-9%) and Pearson (-4%) dropped sharply. Investors fear a repeat of the "Chegg scenario" in the corporate sector. If AI can analyze contracts and precedents better and cheaper than proprietary software costing thousands of dollars, the business model of the "data sellers" is under threat. It looks like the monopoly on legal information is coming to an end.

The stock markets are seeing real drama, and once again artificial intelligence is the director. This time, though, it isn't another NVIDIA surge but a cold shower for the old guard. As soon as Anthropic released a new tool built for corporate lawyers, shares of the European information giants Pearson, Relx and Wolters Kluwer plunged. Relx lost almost 11% and Wolters Kluwer slid 9%. This is not just market noise; it is a distress signal for an entire industry.

Let's look at why investors got so scared. Companies like Relx (owner of LexisNexis) and Wolters Kluwer have sat on a genuine gold mine for decades. They own huge archives of legal information, case law and analysis, and sell access to them for very serious money. Their business looked like an impregnable fortress: the data is unique, the clients are conservative, and the barrier to entry is sky-high. Then Anthropic arrives and shows that its LLM can read, analyze and draft legal documents faster and, crucially, without requiring a subscription that costs as much as a car.

The problem for these corporations is that large language models (LLMs) are a particularly good fit for law. Law is text, logic, spotting contradictions and working with precedent. That is a neural network's natural habitat. Where a lawyer once spent hours digging through clunky database interfaces using Boolean search logic, AI now delivers a relevant summary in seconds. Investors saw the ghost of Chegg here, the education platform whose shares were wiped out after students moved en masse to ChatGPT. Now that scenario is being tried on for the serious B2B sector.

Pearson (-4%) was hit somewhat less, since it is more focused on education, but the overall trend is alarmingly clear. Any business built solely on aggregating and selling access to structured information is in the crosshairs. Anthropic did not simply release a "smart chatbot"; it is deliberately targeting the in-house legal departments of large companies. That is a direct hit to traditional vendors' revenue. Why pay for licenses to complex software if, say, Claude Enterprise plugs straight into your workflow and does the draft work better than a junior lawyer (and doesn't ask for coffee)?

It is interesting to watch how risk perception is shifting. Just a year ago we were discussing neural network hallucinations and saying lawyers were safe. Today the market is voting with its wallet, and the message is: "Your unique data is no longer a protective moat." It is a harsh lesson for those who thought the complexity of the profession and regulatory barriers would shield them from technological change. The speed at which capital flees traditional players at the mere mention of a new AI tool points to the fragility of old business models.

Key takeaway: The era when you could charge huge sums simply for access to a document archive is rapidly ending. If Relx and Wolters Kluwer do not urgently reinvent themselves as AI companies, they face the fate of paper encyclopedia sellers in the age of Google.
