Snowflake and OpenAI: a $200 million alliance (and where Anthropic fits in)

Snowflake is pressing ahead with its aggressive push into AI. The company signed a $200 million contract with OpenAI, giving customers access to top models directly inside its platform. Curiously, Anthropic received exactly the same amount in December. Why would Snowflake sign two identical contracts? The answer is simple: in the fight for enterprise data, the winner will be whoever offers a choice. At the same time, the company launched Cortex Code, a direct competitor to GitHub Copilot. While software stocks are being battered, Snowflake is betting everything on integrating AI "brains" into its cloud. This is not just a partnership but an attempt to become the main gateway to AI in the enterprise.

Snowflake has decided that a single favorite in the world of artificial intelligence is not enough. After writing a $200 million check to the startup Anthropic in December, it is now OpenAI's turn. Same amount, even bigger ambitions. While investors panic and dump software stocks, Snowflake's CEO shows Olympian calm and keeps spending. And this is not just corporate shopping but a strategic attempt to survive in a world where simply storing data is no longer enough.

Why would a cloud giant need to duplicate partnerships? The answer lies in a strategy of technological agnosticism. Enterprise customers are a fickle and cautious bunch. One wants Claude models for their ethics and long context window; another wants GPT-4 for its raw power and mature ecosystem. By offering both giants through its platform, Snowflake turns from an ordinary data warehouse into a supermarket of neural-network solutions. You don't just store your tables with them; you bring them to life with the best tools on the market, without leaving the security perimeter.

Speaking of security and convenience: alongside the deal, Snowflake rolled out Cortex Code, its answer to GitHub Copilot. It is an AI coding assistant that lives directly inside the platform. The idea is that analysts and developers can write SQL queries and Python scripts simply by describing the task in words. It is a logical step: if you control the data, you should control the tools for working with it. Snowflake is trying to remove an extra link in the chain so users don't have to copy data into external services for analysis.

But why is the market so nervous? The large-scale selloff of software-sector stocks, which Sina Finance mentions, suggests that investors have started to doubt the "AI bubble." Will these enormous API-contract expenditures pay off? Snowflake is spending hundreds of millions just to be able to resell someone else's brains. So far it looks like an arms race in which everyone fears being late to the slicing of the pie, even though the pie hasn't been baked yet.

In this game, Snowflake is betting that companies will be too lazy to move their petabytes of data into Microsoft or Google clouds for their built-in models. It's easier to pay Snowflake a bit extra and get the same models "on site." This is a classic lock-in strategy wrapped in a pretty package of innovation. If you already "sit" on Snowflake, you now have one less reason to look toward competitors like Databricks.

The key question: will Snowflake become a universal Swiss Army knife for enterprise AI, or turn into a simple and very expensive middleman between OpenAI and the end user?
