Chinese markets: investors swap gold for AI hardware

Chinese markets opened to a split morning. Traditional safe-haven assets like gold and energy fell sharply, while communications equipment and internet stocks moved against the broader market. Xinyisheng (Eoptolink) led the gains with a 9% jump. The signal is clear: the market is moving capital out of the "old economy" and into the foundations for training neural networks. Despite broad index volatility, China's faith in compute currently appears to outweigh its faith in precious metals.

Trading in Shanghai and Shenzhen opened with a classic market drama: old money colliding with new technological ambitions. While the rest of the world debates geopolitics, Chinese investors are busy with something far more practical — moving their yuan out of gold bars and into optical modules and cloud servers. The indexes opened in different directions: the benchmark SSE Composite fell almost one percent, while the tech-heavy ChiNext, often called China's answer to the Nasdaq, rose briskly.

This isn't random market noise. It's a clear picture of China trying to rebuild its economy on the fly. Let's look at the numbers, because they say more than any slogan.

Precious metals and energy stocks looked like they'd been hit by a steamroller. Zhaojin Mining and Huaxi Nonferrous fell to their daily lower limits, and oil giant CNOOC lost more than 4%. On a normal day, that would trigger panic — but not today.

In the other corner, companies that supply the "circulatory system" for artificial intelligence took off. Xinyisheng, a key player in optical modules for high-speed data transfer in data centers, jumped 9%. The rally comes as Beijing keeps pouring resources into its "New Productive Forces" program, where AI sits at the head of the table.

Why does this matter right now? We're used to treating gold as a "safe haven" in uncertain times. But the current situation shows a new logic taking shape in China: the safe haven isn't what sits in a vault, but what lets you train large language models faster than your competitors.

Even heavyweights like China Mobile slipped slightly, though that looks more like a technical correction after a long rally. Meanwhile, internet companies and communications equipment makers are doing just fine. Investors are betting on infrastructure because they understand that without powerful hardware, any talk of sovereign AI will remain just talk.

It's interesting to watch the market ignore the broadly negative backdrop in favor of specific tech verticals. China's market used to move as a single bloc, following commodity prices; now there's a clear split. Capital is flowing out of extractive industries and old-school telecom giants toward nimble tech companies and cloud providers like Capital Online.

That's a sign of a maturing market: investors are starting to tell hype apart from genuine infrastructure needs that will stay in demand no matter what a barrel of oil or an ounce of gold costs. Of course, this volatility cuts both ways. Sharp spikes in the tech sector can turn into equally sharp cooling if expectations around AI adoption don't translate into profits in the coming quarters.

For now, though, the trend is obvious: China is building a digital fortress, and its bricks are chips and high-speed cables, not gold bars. For us, it's a sign that the global AI arms race is entering a phase of hard-nosed pragmatism, where stock quotes become an indicator of a state's real technology priorities. The bottom line: China's market has firmly picked a favorite — compute now matters more than commodity stability.

Can the AI sector carry the entire economy on its own?
