Intel to Release New LGA1700 CPUs in 2027, Keeping DDR4 in Play

Intel is preparing new processors for LGA1700, a socket that is already five years old, according to TNW. Gigabyte says the chips will arrive in early 2027, and it has released BIOS updates for its entire lineup of B760 and H610 boards. The main point is DDR4 support: that memory is noticeably cheaper than DDR5 at a time when AI demand has pushed module prices to record highs. • LGA1700 will get new CPUs in early 2027 • BIOS updated for all Gigabyte B760 and H610 boards • DDR4 remains a way to hold down build costs

A five-year-old socket is getting a second life. According to Gigabyte, new Intel processors will arrive on LGA1700 in early 2027, and the company has already updated the BIOS for its entire lineup of B760 and H610 chipset boards. That is the key news: a platform Intel has formally replaced stays in service because it supports DDR4. For now, the information comes from a board vendor and is presented as a rumor. Intel itself has not disclosed any details.

Why DDR4

LGA1700 debuted in late 2021 with Alder Lake and has outlasted three Core generations: 12th, 13th and 14th. Boards for it come in both DDR5 and DDR4 versions, depending on the specific model. Its successor, LGA1851 with Core Ultra 200S, works only with DDR5.

The price gap between memory modules now determines the cost of an entire build. According to TNW, AI demand has driven the memory market to record prices. DRAM makers are shifting capacity toward server modules and HBM for accelerators, leaving less for consumer memory. DDR5 is getting more expensive along with the rest of the market, and budget buyers feel it first.

Against that backdrop, DDR4 support stops being a legacy feature and becomes a competitive argument. Anyone who already has a DDR4 kit will be able to swap the processor without replacing the memory or the board.

What we know so far

  • Socket: LGA1700, released in 2021
  • Release window for the new CPUs: early 2027, according to Gigabyte
  • Boards: Gigabyte's entire B760 and H610 lineup has received an updated BIOS
  • Memory: DDR4 is supported, and it is cheaper than DDR5
  • Processor names, cores, clock speeds and prices: not disclosed
  • Official confirmation from Intel: none

The last point matters. A BIOS update across a whole product line suggests serious preparation, but it says nothing about specifications. It is not yet known whether these will be new dies or repackaged existing ones. It is also unclear where their performance will land relative to Core Ultra on LGA1851.

What buyers and integrators should do

If you are planning a PC upgrade on a B760 or H610 board, don't rush to buy a processor. Until Intel makes an announcement, there are no prices or specifications, and the wait is on the order of several months. In the meantime, check your BIOS version: the update is already available for Gigabyte boards, and it is worth installing in advance.

For those building a new system from scratch, the math is simple: add up the cost of the board, processor and memory for both platforms. If a DDR5 kit is still expensive, an LGA1700 and DDR4 combination may come out noticeably cheaper. But this is a platform with no further upgrade path, and that trade-off deserves consideration. For office and home machines it is usually acceptable. For workstations and AI workloads that depend on memory bandwidth, it is not.

For integrators and corporate buyers, this offers a chance to extend the life of a DDR4 fleet without replacing all the hardware. The rest will become clear once Intel names the models and prices.
