MAI Builds a Robot That Automatically Catches Production Defects

The Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) has developed a robotic system for automated quality control in manufacturing. A machine vision system detects defective parts, and a robotic manipulator removes them straight from the conveyor. The whole process runs without human involvement. The system is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses and is designed to be affordable.

The Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) has built a robotic system that fully automates the quality control of parts in production. The system detects defects on its own and removes them from the conveyor without human involvement.

How the system works

The system has two key components. The first is a machine vision system based on computer vision and neural networks, which analyzes parts right on the conveyor. It scans each item in real time and checks for defects, including scratches, misalignments, deformations, incorrect dimensions and other deviations from the norm.

The second component is a robotic manipulator. It receives a signal from the vision system and physically removes the defective part from the production line.

The work is fully automated. When the camera detects a defect, the manipulator grips the part precisely and rejects it, sending it to a reject bin. The process is continuous and does not require stopping the conveyor for quality checks. This speeds up production considerably, removes the human factor from inspection and lowers the chance that a defective item reaches the next processing stage or the customer.

Design features

The system offers several advantages for Russian small and medium-sized businesses:

  • Full automation without human involvement, running 24/7
  • High defect-detection accuracy, with a minimum of missed defects
  • Quick integration with existing conveyor systems
  • Affordable cost compared with foreign analogues
  • Simple maintenance and fast adaptation to different types of parts

The system is trainable: it can be taught to handle parts of any shape and size within a few hours. That makes it a versatile tool for varied manufacturing, from automotive components to electronics and household appliances. Its power consumption is minimal, which substantially cuts running costs.

Use in real production

MAI positions the system as a solution for small and medium-sized businesses looking to raise productivity without massive investment. At many Russian factories, quality control is still done by hand, which slows processing and demands significant labor.

A single inspector cannot check every part at high conveyor speed, which inevitably leads to missed defects. People get tired, get distracted and make mistakes. A robotic system can fully replace this routine work and keep running without breaks for an entire shift without losing accuracy. This is especially critical in production where even one missed defect can damage a company's reputation.

Affordability and next steps

Low cost is the key factor for adoption at Russian enterprises. Many small and medium-sized businesses cannot afford expensive quality-control systems from foreign manufacturers, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. MAI's Russian-made system could close that gap and make robotic quality control accessible to a wider range of domestic companies. That could spur a wave of automation in manufacturing and create demand for other robotic solutions for small business.

What this means

The arrival of an affordable domestic automatic quality-control system signals progress in Russia's robotics sector. It could be a turning point for small and medium-sized manufacturers that are ready to invest in automation but cannot afford imported solutions. If the system proves effective in real production, it could become the prototype for a whole line of domestic robots for quality control, maintenance and logistics.
