Sova AI releases an Android assistant that controls your phone without a PC or root
Sova AI has unveiled an Android assistant that operates apps directly on the smartphone, with no ADB, USB, root or computer connection. The agent works through the Accessibility API, combines the interface tree with screenshots and can carry out voice commands. The idea is to bring computer-use to a mobile setting, where the assistant is always at hand instead of being tied to a PC.

Sova AI is trying to claim a niche the big players have not really filled yet: an AI assistant that does not just answer queries but actually acts inside Android apps, right on the smartphone. The project is pitched as the first mobile agent of its kind that needs no ADB, no USB connection, no root and no link to a PC. The user installs a regular app, can optionally set it as the system assistant, and gives voice or text commands. The agent then opens the required services, taps buttons, scrolls screens and works through the steps the way a person would.
Sova AI's main bet is not on yet another chat interface but on the idea of a constant presence on the mobile device. Mobile-use solutions already exist on the market, but many of them still require connecting the phone to a computer, debugging over a cable or other technical workarounds. For mainstream users that is inconvenient: if a PC is already nearby, it makes more sense to hand the task to classic computer-use or browser-use. The authors start from a different scenario: the phone should remain a self-contained environment where an assistant can perform a routine action at any moment, whether on the road, in a queue, between meetings or when there is simply no laptop at hand.
Technically, the agent relies on the Android Accessibility API. This lets it see the screen structure through the interface tree, find controls and reproduce user actions: taps, scrolling, switching between apps and other basic steps. But the developers stress that screenshots alone are not enough for this task. Models do not always interpret interface images consistently, handle image quality differently and can make mistakes on small elements. So Sova AI took a hybrid approach: data from the screen tree is combined with visual context to improve accuracy while keeping token consumption per operation from ballooning.
The economics matter to the product as much as the automation magic. If a mobile agent has to get through many steps inside apps, the cost of each scenario quickly becomes critical. Sova AI's creators say outright that they tried to avoid a situation where the user spends too many resources on a trivial action such as ordering food or finishing a short household task.
Hence the focus on combining structured data with imagery rather than a pure vision approach. In addition, the agent can be set as the default assistant, so it can be launched by voice and turn a command straight into action, rather than into yet another reply along the lines of "I can't interact with apps."
Of particular interest is that Sova AI offers a stricter definition of the word "assistant." Over the past two years the market has filled up with services that summarize, search, suggest and hold a conversation well, but stop at the border of real action. Sova AI is trying to push that border back and turn the smartphone into a platform for an agentic interface, where AI not only explains what needs to be done but also goes through the required sequence of steps itself. For now the project is available on Android, and an iOS version is in development, which makes sense: Android currently offers more room for this kind of integration.
The takeaway is simple: Sova AI shows where the next wave of consumer AI products may be heading, from conversational helpers to executive agents. If this approach proves reliable, fast and cheap enough, mobile-use has a chance to become a mass-market segment of its own rather than a developer demo. But along with the convenience, the demands on accuracy, privacy and control over permissions will inevitably grow. For the user this is no longer just a chat, but software that gets access to the phone's interface and acts on their behalf.
