Ford launches AI assistant for fleets that monitors drivers' seat belts

Ford has unveiled Ford Pro AI, an artificial intelligence tool for commercial fleet operators. It debuted at Work Truck Week in Indianapolis and is already available to Ford Pro Telematics subscribers in the US. Its headline feature: the AI tells dispatchers in real time whether a driver is wearing a seat belt. For large fleets, that means fewer fines, lower insurance risk and less manual monitoring.

Ford Pro AI is a new artificial intelligence tool from the American automaker for commercial fleet operators. It debuted at the Work Truck Week trade show in Indianapolis and became available immediately to all Ford Pro Telematics subscribers in the US. Its main goal is to help fleet managers make decisions faster and with less effort.

One of the first announced features is seat belt monitoring. The system analyzes telematics data and alerts dispatchers if a driver is not buckled up while the vehicle is moving. For fleets with hundreds of vehicles, this is critically important: checking every driver by hand is unrealistic, and traffic fines and insurance premiums add up to significant sums.

Ford Pro Telematics is the company's existing platform for managing commercial vehicles. It collects real-time data: location, engine condition, fuel consumption and diagnostic codes. Ford Pro AI sits on top of this infrastructure and adds a layer of analytics based on generative AI. Instead of working through tables and reports themselves, managers can simply ask the system a question, such as "Which vehicles did not pass scheduled maintenance today?" or "Which drivers broke the speed limit in the past week?", and get an answer in plain language.

The launch at Work Truck Week is no accident. The Indianapolis show is the key event for the US commercial vehicle market. It draws operators from city services, construction companies, logistics fleets and utilities: everyone who manages a large number of work vehicles and wants to cut costs and improve safety. Ford is deliberately positioning Pro AI for this audience.

Ford's move fits a broader trend: the biggest automakers are actively building AI into B2B products. General Motors is promoting OnStar with machine learning features, and Stellantis is investing in its Mobilisights data monetization platform. The competition is not only over hardware, but over whose fleet management ecosystem proves more convenient. Ford is betting on a conversational AI interface that lowers the barrier to entry for small companies without in-house data analysts.

At launch, Ford Pro AI is still a limited tool. The company announced seat belt monitoring as the first of many features. Further development depends on user feedback and on their willingness to share vehicle data. Privacy and cybersecurity concerns for telematics platforms remain relevant: the more data a system collects, the higher the risk in the event of a leak.

Still, the direction is the right one. According to the US National Safety Council, work-related crashes involving motor vehicles cost American employers billions of dollars every year. If Ford's AI assistant helps cut that figure even partially, the market will readily adopt it.

The word "assistant" is key here: Ford Pro AI does not yet make decisions for people, but helps them make decisions faster. This is the step where real automation of fleet management begins.
