Handshake hires improv actors to teach OpenAI human emotion

Handshake AI, which supplies training data to OpenAI, is looking for improv actors. They will play out emotionally charged scenes, not for the stage but to train language models. AI labs are no longer satisfied with standard datasets: they want live, unpredictable human speech with real emotion. Creative professions are increasingly drawn into producing data for systems that may eventually replace them.

Handshake AI has posted a job listing for improv actors, not for theater or film, but for training language models. The contractor for OpenAI and other leading AI labs is looking for people who can convincingly convey emotion and hold a character through an entire scene.

Handshake AI is one of the few companies specializing in producing niche training data for AI labs. It works with OpenAI and several other major players in the market.

The job is not standard text labeling but live acting: spontaneous reactions, improvised dialogue, and convincing portrayal of complex emotional states. It is a fundamentally different level of requirements for contractors.

In the past, text from the internet and relatively simple labeled datasets were enough to train language models. But as models have grown more capable, the demands have changed. Voice assistants, support agents, role-play systems and therapy chatbots all need to do more than form grammatically correct sentences: they must pick up subtle emotional undertones, respond to sarcasm, and convey confusion, sincere joy or anxiety. This is what is hardest to imitate with synthetic data.

Improv is an ideal genre for the task. Improv actors are trained to react instantly without breaking character, to sustain the emotional tone of a scene and to do so convincingly, without scripted lines. This is exactly the kind of live, unpredictable human speech that standard training corpora lack, where dialogue often sounds sterile and formulaic.

The hunt for human uniqueness is becoming a visible industry trend. In recent years, AI companies have already hired writers, lawyers, doctors, programmers and translators, anyone who can provide quality examples of professional thinking and speech. Now it is the turn of creative performers.

Apparently, Handshake's clients have made a specific request: simply "diverse dialogue" no longer suffices. They want live, emotionally rich improvisation.

The listing does not say how much the work pays or what format it takes. Still, the fact that it exists is telling. AI companies increasingly understand that the next frontier of model quality lies not in scaling the volume of data but in its character. The number of tokens in training corpora passed the trillions long ago; now what matters is not the figure but the subtlety.

For actors, this is an ambiguous opportunity. On one hand, it is real income for a unique creative skill. On the other, it means helping build tools that, in the view of many creative professionals, will ultimately push them out of the market. The debate over the ethics of hiring people to train AI that could threaten their own professions has run for a long time, but it has not yet led to meaningful changes in regulation or practice.

Handshake AI's activity signals that the race for human-quality data is accelerating. The more realistically language models imitate human speech, the livelier and more specific the material used to train them must be. And as long as that loop stays closed, improv actors have work, even if its purpose leaves them with mixed feelings.
