AWS chief explains why investing in both Anthropic and OpenAI is not a conflict of interest

The head of AWS has explained why the company is investing billions in both Anthropic and OpenAI, two direct competitors. The answer lies in Amazon's corporate culture: the cloud giant has long been used to competing with its own partners. Retailers, streaming services and SaaS companies are all customers and rivals at the same time. In the generative AI race, AWS is betting not on a winner but on the infrastructure that serves every participant.

The head of Amazon Web Services has explained why the company is investing billions of dollars in both Anthropic and OpenAI, the two main competitors in the generative AI market. The answer turned out to be unexpectedly pragmatic: for AWS this is not an exception to the rules but familiar corporate logic.

At first glance the situation looks paradoxical. Anthropic, the maker of the Claude family of models, and OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and GPT-4o, are fighting for the same enterprise AI market, leadership in which could be worth tens of billions of dollars. Yet both receive major investments from the same cloud provider.

The topic surfaced as regulators and investors take a growing interest in the transparency of cross-investments in the AI industry.

AWS leadership attributed the arrangement to a corporate culture formed inside the company over decades. Amazon has long operated with unavoidable duality: the cloud giant constantly competes with the very partners that use its infrastructure. Hundreds of thousands of companies host their products and services on AWS, and many of them also compete with Amazon in adjacent areas. Retailers compete with Amazon.com, streaming platforms with Prime Video, SaaS providers with AWS's own services. This is the standard state of affairs, not a conflict.

AWS holds a leading position in the global cloud infrastructure market. Through the Amazon Bedrock platform, the company offers access to language models from dozens of different developers, including ones that compete directly with each other. What matters to AWS is not that a particular AI player wins, but that these models are developed and run on Amazon's infrastructure. The more computing modern AI demands, the more the cloud provider earns.

The investments in Anthropic and OpenAI fit this hedging logic. Whichever model proves best in two or three years, AWS remains the infrastructure foundation on which both companies build their business. The cloud provider profits on both sides: from partnership agreements, from selling computing capacity, and from the rising value of its portfolio investments.

This approach reflects Amazon's broader AI strategy. The company is not backing a single favorite; it is building the very platform on which the race is run. For AWS enterprise customers this means a practical advantage: a choice among several leading models through a single interface, without rigid lock-in to one vendor.

The question of a potential conflict of interest is unlikely to be settled quickly. Regulators continue to watch how large tech companies weave a web of cross-investments in the AI industry. AWS, however, sees this not as a vulnerability but as an extension of the model that made it the dominant cloud player: being useful to every market participant at once, and earning money regardless of who comes out ahead.
