Yelp turns its AI assistant into a digital concierge that can book reservations
Yelp has turned its AI assistant into a full-fledged digital concierge. The updated Yelp Assistant now takes center stage in the app, answering questions, recommending businesses, and booking tables, all within a single conversation. The company is betting that its hundreds of millions of user reviews will give it a competitive edge against Google and ChatGPT in the fight over local search.

Yelp has rolled out a major update to its AI assistant, and the Yelp Assistant chatbot is now billed as "the center of the entire app." Users can ask about restaurants, get personalized recommendations, and book a table on the spot without ever leaving the chat. It all happens in one conversation.
The company is rethinking how the product works. Yelp used to be a search tool: you typed a query, scrolled through listings, and clicked through to a business page. Now it is betting on a conversational interface, where the bot guides users from question to action. In effect, Yelp is trying to turn a review aggregator into a concierge platform, much like Google's Travel Assistant or what Perplexity is doing for search.
The update covers several areas. Yelp Assistant can clarify what users need over the course of the conversation, asking about allergies or preferred price range, for example, before it makes a recommendation. Booking is available directly in the chat through partner integrations. One of the first vertical use cases is booking appointments at beauty salons through Vagaro.
The company's key asset in this race is data. Over 20 years, Yelp has collected hundreds of millions of reviews, photos, and ratings from real users. That body of data now serves as training material and context for the AI model, which could potentially deliver recommendation accuracy that newcomers can't match. With OpenAI, Google, and other major platforms aggressively moving into local search, it is one of the few real competitive advantages Yelp has.
The update looks like a direct response to the threat from general-purpose language models. ChatGPT, and Google with its AI Overview integration, can already answer questions like "where can I eat nearby." If users get that answer from a general-purpose assistant, why open Yelp at all? The company's answer: offer an AI that doesn't just answer, but follows through to an outcome, all the way to an actual reservation.
Yelp isn't the only vertical platform taking this route. Booking.com, Tripadvisor, and Zillow are rolling out conversational AI interfaces on top of their own data to varying degrees. The trend is clear: aggregators with years of historical data are monetizing it through an AI layer before general-purpose models lock down the niche for good.
The stakes are high for Yelp. The company has long been looking for a source of growth since the pandemic and amid a slow decline in its share of search. Turning the app from "yellow pages with reviews" into an AI assistant that actually helps people get things done (not just find a place, but book an appointment, reserve a table, and get a confirmation) marks a change in its value proposition. Whether it works will depend on the quality of the recommendations and the reach of its partner integrations.
For now, Yelp Assistant is available to users in the US. The company promises to expand its capabilities over the course of 2026.
