Google adds Canvas to AI Mode right inside Search

Google has opened Canvas in AI Mode to all users in the US. People can now create documents, drafts and interactive tools right in Search. The feature is built into AI Mode, Google Search's experimental AI-powered mode. The company is expanding what Search can do, turning it from a tool for finding information into a full working environment.

Google turns Search into a workspace: Canvas arrives in AI Mode for all US users

The Google search bar is no longer just a place to type questions and get links. The company has announced general availability of Canvas within AI Mode, the experimental AI-powered mode of Google Search. Any US user can now create documents, sketch out drafts and build interactive tools directly inside Search, without leaving the familiar interface.

To understand the scale of this move, some context helps. AI Mode emerged as Google's answer to the challenge from ChatGPT and other conversational AI platforms, which began pulling audience away from traditional search. While OpenAI and Anthropic built full-fledged work environments around language models, Google found itself in an awkward position: it has both the technology and the audience, but its product remained largely reactive. It answered queries but did not help users act on them. Canvas changes that logic fundamentally.

Canvas is essentially a built-in editor with an AI assistant that can do more than generate text: it can also structure it into a finished document or a functional tool. A user can ask the system to write a business letter, draft a project plan or build an interactive calculator, and get the result right in the search window, without switching between tabs and services. The word "interactive" matters here: these are not static text answers but small applications users can interact with in real time. That is a qualitatively different level of usefulness from what search engines offered before.

For the industry, this step means sharper competition on several fronts at once. First, Google is moving directly into the territory of Notion, Google Docs and Microsoft Word, tools that until now remained separate apps. There is an irony in it: the company is competing with itself. Google Docs has existed for almost twenty years, and now the corporation is building an alternative inside Search. Second, Canvas challenges ChatGPT head-on. ChatGPT has offered a similar feature under the same name for a while: Canvas appeared in OpenAI's interface back in 2024. Google is not inventing the genre but aggressively entering an already established market, leaning on its main advantage: billions of daily Search users.

That is where the strategic point lies. Google does not need to persuade people to install a new app or sign up for a new platform. It only has to add the feature where people already go every day. This distribution advantage is practically impossible for startups, or even for large competitors, to replicate. If Canvas proves useful, it could become one of the most widely used AI tools for content creation, simply because of its accessibility rather than any uniqueness of the technology.

That said, this model has weaknesses worth discussing honestly. AI Mode still carries experimental status, which means unstable features and no guarantee of long-term support. Google has a habit of launching products with great fanfare and then quietly shutting them down, and the company's history includes dozens of such examples. In addition, building complex content-creation tools into the search interface risks overloading the product: Search has always been valued for speed and simplicity, while Canvas adds layers of complexity that do not suit every query.

Still, the direction of travel is clear. Google is methodically turning Search from a tool for finding information into a full working environment, where you can not only learn something but immediately create, format or automate it. Canvas is not the final point of this transformation but another step toward a search engine that thinks together with the user. If the experiment succeeds, in a few years today's search page with ten blue links may look like a historical artifact, much as library card catalogs look to us today.
