Qwen Buys Loyalty: Alibaba Spends 30 Billion Yuan on Free Tea

Alibaba has launched an aggressive campaign in its Qwen app. To mark Chinese New Year, the company set aside 30 billion yuan for free orders, including milk tea, placed through voice commands to the AI. It is the largest holiday marketing investment in the group's history. Integration with Taobao, Alipay and Amap turns the chatbot into an all-purpose life assistant. While competitors compare benchmarks, Alibaba is teaching millions of people that AI isn't only code: it's a tool for everyday shopping. The move all but erases the line between the search bar and real-world spending.

While Western tech giants argue about superintelligence safety, Alibaba took a proven route and simply bought its users tea. On the morning of February 6, the Qwen app launched a promotion called the "30 Billion Holiday Giveaway." The idea is simple: you ask the AI to order you a drink, and it does so for free. The promotion goes well beyond a cute Chinese New Year gimmick. It is the largest marketing campaign in Alibaba's history, and its goal is to move AI out of the geek-toy category and make it a routine tool for ordinary shoppers.

The context matters more than the free cup of tea. Chinese New Year has traditionally been the season of the "red envelope wars," when Alibaba and Tencent fight for the attention of hundreds of millions of people. This year, the rules changed. Instead of simple cash transfers, Alibaba is rolling its Qwen language model out to the front line of consumer spending. The company wants "order me something" to feel like a natural continuation of a thought, not a complicated technical process. That is why the promotion spans the entire ecosystem, from the Alipay payment system to the Amap navigation app and the Fliggy travel service.

Integration with Taobao and Alipay turns Qwen into a full-fledged operating interface. It is no longer only a chat window where you can ask for a pie recipe; it is now an entry point into a retail empire. Alibaba is betting that users can't be bothered to switch between apps, search for products and compare prices. If AI can do that in a second from a voice command, the barrier to buying disappears. 30 billion yuan is a steep price for training an audience, but in the long run, owning the "entry point" to the consumer's wallet is worth far more.

The Qwen app had already gained AI shopping features through its tie-in with Taobao Flash Sale. Now we are seeing an attempt to merge online services with offline consumption. When you order tea through an AI, you validate the concept of an AI-first life. For Alibaba, this is critical: after its restructuring and pressure from competitors such as PDD Holdings, the company needs to prove that it still sets market trends. Using LLMs (Large Language Models) as the primary shopping agent is its strongest move.

It will be interesting to see how quickly this trend reaches us. We are used to AI writing text or generating images, but Alibaba is skipping that stage. It is making AI part of the consumer economy right away. The question isn't how smart Qwen is on Turing tests, but how many transactions it can complete without human involvement. If this year's experiment succeeds, next year we will see AI handling not only food orders but also vacation planning, real estate purchases and personal finance management in real time.

The bottom line: Alibaba is turning AI from a "smart conversationalist" into a "universal remote control for life." Will other LLM developers be able to offer something equally practical, or will they stay confined to text chats?
