Alexa+: Amazon finally turns its "dumb" speaker into a real AI

Amazon has officially launched Alexa+ for all users in the US. After months of waiting and rumors of a paid subscription, the company chose a hybrid model: Prime customers get everything for free on any device, while everyone else can use it through the web and mobile apps. This is not just a software update. It is Amazon's attempt to catch up with OpenAI and Google in the race to become the leading digital assistant. While rivals build ever more complex LLMs, Amazon is betting on integration with your real daily life. The only question is whether it woke up too late: for years, the old Alexa did little more than set alarms and play music on request.

Remember that faint irritation when you asked Alexa something slightly harder than "what's the weather today" and got the stock reply "sorry, I don't know that"? For years, Amazon's smart speakers were the most expensive and sophisticated kitchen timers in the world. While OpenAI and Anthropic taught their models to write code and philosophize about the meaning of life, Alexa kept tripping over shopping lists. But today the rules of the game are changing. Amazon has officially opened Alexa+ to all users in the US, and it is arguably the company's most important move in the past decade.

Let's be honest: Amazon slept through the start of the large language model revolution. With millions of devices already in people's homes, the company let Apple and Google overtake it on the curve when it came to intelligence. Alexa+ is not a cosmetic touch-up but a complete engine swap. The assistant is now built on a full-fledged LLM that can keep the context of a conversation, understand complex instructions and, most importantly, actually help plan your day instead of just reading out Wikipedia articles.

The monetization approach chosen by Jeff Bezos and his successors is interesting. Instead of immediately rolling out a hard paywall, which insiders have been trumpeting for the past six months, Amazon decided to make Alexa+ a free perk for Prime subscribers. It is a smart move. Given that almost every second American household already has Prime, the company instantly gets a huge base of testers. Those who don't want to pay for a subscription can chat with the new AI in a browser or through the mobile app. It is a clear attempt to pull Alexa out of the plastic box on the kitchen counter and turn it into a full-fledged ChatGPT competitor on your smartphone.

Why does this matter right now? Because the smart home market is stagnating. People are tired of simply switching on lights by voice. They want a digital butler that understands the phrase "get the living room ready for a movie" and dims the lamps, closes the curtains and launches the right streaming service on its own, without asking unnecessary questions. Alexa+ promises exactly this kind of seamless integration. Amazon has something OpenAI does not: a physical presence in your home through its device ecosystem. If it can make the AI run this infrastructure without glitches, that becomes a serious argument against any chatbot on a smartphone.

Skepticism hasn't gone anywhere, though. The technical debt of the old Alexa is enormous, and its reputation as a "dumb" assistant has stuck for good. The company will have to work hard to persuade users to trust their errands to their voice again. Competition is also heating up: Apple Intelligence is on the way, and Google Gemini is actively taking over control on Android devices. Amazon is jumping onto a departing train, and Alexa+ is its first-class ticket, which may turn out to be its last. Whether this AI will really be smart, or we will simply get a more talkative egg timer, only time and the first reviews from real users will tell.

Bottom line: Amazon is betting on its ecosystem and Prime, trying to turn Alexa from a toy into a working tool. Can it push ChatGPT out of everyday use?
