Samsung NAND: Prices Double Before You Finish Reading This Headline

Samsung shocked the market by raising NAND memory prices by 100% in the first quarter, right after a 70% jump in DRAM prices. The main cause is a severe supply-demand imbalance, driven by the AI boom and last year's production cuts. Negotiations for the second quarter are already under way, and analysts do not expect good news for consumers' wallets. Cheap SSDs look like they are becoming history.

If you were planning to build a new server or just upgrade your home PC with a fast drive, I have bad news. Samsung Electronics, which effectively sets the rules of the semiconductor market, has decided it is time to close the attraction of unprecedented generosity. In the first quarter of this year, the company raised NAND flash prices by more than 100%. This is not just a "course correction" but a genuine price shock that made even hardened component suppliers flinch.

Let's recall the context to grasp the scale of the damage. Throughout last year, the memory industry was in a deep slump: warehouses were overflowing, demand for smartphones and laptops was falling, and manufacturers were losing billions. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron had to cut production sharply to stop prices from falling. At the time, it seemed the market would recover gradually.

Then artificial intelligence entered the picture, needing not merely a lot of memory but a staggering amount to train huge language models. As a result, the pendulum swung the other way with alarming speed. First we heard about DRAM prices rising by almost 70%, and now it is the turn of storage drives.

According to sources in South Korea, Samsung finished negotiations with key customers as early as the end of last year, and the new pricing took effect in January. The ironic part is that the market expected an increase, but nobody was ready for a doubling. It is a textbook case of a dominant player using a shortage not only to make up for past losses but to cement a new level of margins.

Why does this matter right now? Because NAND underpins every SSD, from the one in your laptop to the giant arrays in data centers. The corporate sector may still be able to pass these costs on to end users of cloud services, but for consumer electronics makers it will be a serious test. We are already seeing the cost of high-performance drives start to creep up, and that is only the tip of the iceberg.

The situation is worsened by the fact that Samsung does not intend to stop. Right now the company is conducting aggressive negotiations on second-quarter supply. Insiders whisper that the upward trend will continue. With production not yet back at full capacity after last year's cuts, and demand from AI giants only growing, buyers simply have no leverage. Either you pay double, or you go without components in the middle of a technology race.

There is a geopolitical undertone as well. Samsung is clearly showing who is boss, as the US and China try to build up their own chip production. While competitors work to get their process technologies running, the Koreans simply change the figures on their price lists, skimming the cream off a global shortage. It is a harsh but logical survival game in an industry where one wrong forecast can cost decades of leadership.

What does this mean for us? Most likely, over the next six months we will see price increases across the board, from smartphones with large storage to cloud storage subscriptions. The AI revolution demands sacrifices, and the first casualty, it seems, is our expectation of affordable digital space. If you still see an SSD at the old price in a local store, it may be the best investment of the month.

Bottom line: Cheap memory is dead; long live scarcity. Are you ready to pay an "AI tax" on every gadget purchase?
