According to Shopify, in the second quarter of 2026, traffic and orders from AI search engines to stores on the platform tripled year-over-year — while traditional Google search did not lose its position.

Why AI search is not cannibalizing Google traffic

Unlike media publishers, Shopify does not record organic traffic displacement due to the growth of AI search engines. According to the company, in April–June 2026, AI channels brought three times more visitors and orders than during the same period in 2025 — and Google traffic did not simultaneously decline.

The structural difference is explained by the nature of the transaction. When a user searches for information or reads an article, an AI search engine — Perplexity, ChatGPT, or "Yandex Neuro" — generates a complete answer directly within the interface. The user gets what they need without visiting the source website.

For media, this is a loss of traffic without compensation. For an online store, the mechanics are different: it is impossible to purchase a product inside an AI search engine — the buyer must navigate to the store page, select a product, and pay. Therefore, the AI engine acts as a referral agent: it selects users with an already-formed intent to buy and directs them straight to the seller.

This fundamentally changes the balance of power. Media publishers suffer from the growth of zero-click search — answers that AI generates without any site visit. For ecommerce, the same technology works in reverse: an AI search engine cannot close the transaction by itself, so it converts the intent to buy into a click-through.

What the Q2 2026 data showed

  • Traffic from AI search engines to Shopify stores: 3x growth year-over-year
  • Orders from AI sources: 3x growth in April–June 2026
  • Google traffic to the platform: did not decline, according to the company
  • Shopify did not disclose absolute traffic figures — only the growth coefficient
"AI does not cannibalize search traffic the way it happened with publishers," — stated in

Shopify's quarterly report.

What has changed for store owners

AI search is becoming an independent customer acquisition channel — not a replacement for classic SEO, but a complement to it. Users who find a store via ChatGPT or Perplexity arrive with a higher readiness to purchase: they have already received a recommendation from an AI assistant and click on the link with deliberate intent.

In practice, this means a new optimization priority. Visibility in AI search engines is shaped by clear answers to typical buyer questions, structured characteristic descriptions, and technical data formats that AI engines read directly. Shopify did not provide specific recommendations — the growth statistics are themselves sufficiently eloquent.

The company did not disclose which product categories or store types showed above-average growth. The threefold year-over-year dynamic nevertheless means that AI search engines have already become a real source of orders, not an experimental channel.

What this means

Shopify's data demonstrates a structural gap: AI search affects different industries differently. For media publishers — it is a threat to organic traffic: when AI summarizes an article, there is no reason to visit the site. For ecommerce — the opposite: AI assistants function as a converting referral channel. Stores that invested in quality descriptions and data structure are now receiving additional returns through AI search engines — not instead of Google, but on top of it.
