Yandex Maps' AI assistant can now recommend places for leisure and cultural outings

Yandex Maps has updated its built-in AI assistant: it now recommends places for leisure based on specific criteria. The user describes the task in words — «a restaurant with live fish until midnight» or «an ice rink with skate rental for children on Saturday» — and the assistant selects options on the map. Supported criteria include opening hours, menu items, and type of activity. The query is refined through dialogue.

Yandex Maps expanded the capabilities of its built-in AI assistant in July 2026: it can now provide recommendations for places for active and cultural leisure, taking into account specific preferences — operating hours, menu composition, and type of activity.

What the AI Assistant Can Do Now

Previously, the AI assistant in Yandex Maps primarily performed navigation tasks and basic category search. After the update, it transitioned into the role of a dialogue-based leisure advisor — and now accepts multi-component requests in natural language.

A user can describe a task in free form — "I want to have dinner at a restaurant with live fish, open until midnight" or "find an ice rink with skate rental for kids on Saturday morning" — and the assistant will process all conditions and offer suitable options on the map. If the first results don't match, the request is clarified in the dialogue without having to restart the search.

Criteria can be added sequentially: start with "restaurants with live fish", get a list, then ask "only those open until 11 PM" — the assistant will narrow down the selection. Geographic refinement works similarly: "closer to the metro" or "in this neighborhood".

Key capabilities:

  • Operating hours — selection of establishments open on the required day and time
  • Menu composition — availability of specific dishes, beverages, or cuisine at a restaurant or café
  • Type of activity — sports and fitness, cultural leisure, entertainment, walks, family activities
  • Dialogue refinement — the request is adjusted in several steps without restarting the search

The assistant covers both establishments (restaurants, cafes, bars) and activities (sports facilities, parks, cultural spaces) — everything in the Yandex Maps database.

How This Differs from Search with Filters

Standard search in mapping services works linearly: the user selects a category, manually adjusts filters, and views the list. Each new criterion is an additional step. This scheme is convenient for simple queries, but becomes inconvenient when there are multiple conditions or they fall outside standard filters.

A dialogue AI assistant works differently: it accepts a request in natural language and interprets it as a whole. The user doesn't need to figure out which specific filter to use for "a café with a quiet atmosphere, outlets, and good wifi, open today after 8 PM". The assistant will process such a request as a single entity and select the criteria itself.

The dialogue format also lowers the barrier to entry for less experienced users: it's enough to describe the situation in words ("there are three of us adults, traveling with children, we want something active on Saturday morning"), and the system will do the rest. Familiar filters don't disappear — but now the user has an alternative. This brings map interaction closer to how people typically ask friends for advice.

Why These Features Are Appearing Now

Yandex Maps is one of the most visited mapping services in Russia and the CIS with tens of millions of active users. Adding an AI leisure advisor fits into the overall strategy of tech companies: embedding generative AI not as a separate product, but as a functional layer within already-used services.

This approach allows to offer the AI feature to the maximum audience immediately — without needing to convince users to download a new app. A person uses Yandex Maps the same way as before, but now gets a smart assistant right inside the familiar interface. For Yandex, this is also a way to increase engagement: a user receiving useful leisure advice returns to the app more often.

What This Means

The Yandex Maps update is a small but telling step: the AI assistant ceases to be a separate chatbot and becomes part of everyday life infrastructure. For the end user, this means fewer steps between "I want to go somewhere" and "here's the specific address and route to the place I need".
