Apple is preparing to give users full control over AI in its ecosystem. In iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, users will be able to select any third-party AI model for Apple Intelligence instead of built-in tools.

Apple's Extension System

The new architecture will be called Extensions. Compatible AI models will be able to work not only in Siri, but also in all Apple Intelligence tools: Writing Tools (text rewriting), Image Playground (image generation), and others. The system will allow users to literally swap the Apple Intelligence "brain" for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any other agent.

Previously, Apple Intelligence was locked within its own boundaries — you used built-in models because there was simply no alternative. Now the company is opening this system to competition. It's similar to how smartphones allowed choosing a browser: formally there was a choice, but until recently Safari was built in rigidly.

Each extension will work within the Apple ecosystem, but using its own API and third-party data processing. Apple guarantees compatibility, but competing AI agents will be able to differ in speed, accuracy, and processing features.

Siri Voices for Each Model

Apple will add one more feature: different Siri voices for different AI models. If you switch to ChatGPT, responses will be voiced using the selected voice. For Claude — its own. This will help you intuitively understand which agent is currently listening to you and create a more personalized experience. The feature is especially useful for professionals who use different AI tools for different tasks. Instead of opening separate applications, you can stay within Apple's ecosystem and simply switch models as needed.

What Will Change for Users

This architecture eliminates the main limitation of Apple's closed ecosystem — the AI monopoly. Users will be able to:

  • Choose the best AI model for each task (Claude for code, ChatGPT for creative texts)
  • Switch models directly in system tools without opening separate applications
  • Keep context and query history in Apple
  • Assign different Siri voices to different models for convenience

What This Means

Apple is essentially embedding an AI model marketplace directly into the OS. Users will get choice, and AI service developers will get access to billions of iPhones. For the ecosystem, this is a huge shift: previously Apple kept everything in its own hands, now competition opens up right inside the system. This could become the beginning of a new era in mobile OS, where AI becomes not a service, but a choice.
