Anthropic Now Has More Business Customers Than OpenAI, Ramp Data Shows

Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI in paying business customers for the first time. According to survey data from fintech platform Ramp, 34.4% of companies pay for Anthropic's services, while 32.3% pay for OpenAI. It's a turning point: for the first time in two years, another company is pushing OpenAI aside in the enterprise market. The reasons are pricing and reliability, not big names.

Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI in paying business customers for the first time. According to fintech platform Ramp, the shift happened just this week. It marks a turning point for the generative AI market.

The numbers speak for themselves 34.4% of

Ramp's active corporate customers pay for Anthropic's services, compared with 32.3% for OpenAI. A gap of 2.1 percentage points may look small, but after two years of OpenAI dominance, it's a significant reversal. Ramp's sample covers thousands of companies of all sizes, from tech startups to Fortune 500 corporations. The sample isn't representative of the entire market (it consists mostly of solvent US firms), but it reflects a real trend among companies that have already spent money on AI tools. Other players (Google Gemini, Meta Llama, Mistral) still trail far behind.

How Anthropic caught up with OpenAI The lead didn't come out of nowhere.

Over the past 12 months, Anthropic shipped several versions of Claude, each improving the price-performance ratio. First, Claude 3.5 Sonnet beat GPT-4o on benchmark scores; then 4.

0 and 4.1 cemented the advantage; and in early 2026 came Claude 4.6, with support for a 1-million-token context window.

OpenAI, meanwhile, focused on reasoning models (o1, o2, with o3 coming soon). They're powerful models, ideal for complex tasks, but expensive: a single request can cost as much as a monthly Claude subscription. Anthropic invested in what matters to enterprises: Prompt caching — prefix caching in the API at half price Built-in Tool Use support, no workarounds required Predictable pricing (no price spikes for large contexts) Active developer education through webinars and documentation * Transparent communication about model safety and limitations ## Why the market chose Anthropic Three factors played a role.

First, demand for production systems. When a company is experimenting, it's willing to pay a premium for a big name. But once a system goes into production and serves millions of requests, price and reliability come first.

OpenAI raised its prices, which drove away some customers. Second, Anthropic is open. The company publishes research, runs bug bounty programs, and is candid about the risk of hallucinations.

That lowers the risk for corporate customers, who have to answer to their boards. Third, the ecosystem. Claude now has Claude Code (IDE integration) and agents (autonomous workflows), and its API is stable.

That creates a sticky effect: once a developer has invested in an integration, they're reluctant to switch vendors.

What this means going forward

For the AI market, this is the first significant shift in the status quo. OpenAI remains the leader in the consumer segment (ChatGPT has 200+ million users). But in B2B, the era of monopoly is over. Anthropic is no longer chasing; it's setting the pace. Companies now choose tools based on ROI, not brand. That's good for everyone: competition lowers prices and speeds up innovation.
