Microsoft Edge will receive enhanced Copilot capabilities — now the AI assistant will be able to simultaneously analyze information from all of the user's open browser tabs.
Why This Is Needed
Usually AI assistants only see the current page. The new Copilot feature will allow asking questions about everything that is open in the browser. Users will be able to compare products on different websites, summarize multiple articles simultaneously, or verify information in a document by looking at several sources. This is especially useful in practical situations:
- Comparing prices and product specifications on different marketplaces before purchase
- Summarizing information from multiple articles and research papers for a project
- Analyzing data in different spreadsheets and documents
- Quickly finding connections between information on different websites and sources
How It Works
When chatting with Copilot, you can launch tab analysis, and the assistant will see the content of each open page, then answer your questions based on the collected information. Microsoft promises that users will be able to choose which "experiences" they want to use — meaning not all features are enabled by default. This means that if you don't like the browser analyzing certain types of content, you'll be able to disable them in settings.
End of Copilot Mode
Microsoft simultaneously announced the discontinuation of a separate Copilot Mode, which did something similar: it analyzed information from tabs and could perform certain actions on behalf of the user (for example, book accommodations or set reminders in the calendar). Instead of two different tools, the company is consolidating functionality into one — the new Copilot with optional capabilities. This is simpler for users who don't need to remember when to use which tool, and reduces the development burden of separate features.
What This Means
The browser is becoming an integrated assistant for information research. Instead of copying text between tabs or using a separate ChatGPT window, users can ask Copilot directly in Edge. This is another step toward a browser where AI helps not just search for information, but process it, find connections, and save time on routine operations.
