Alibaba is preparing to launch its first robot — a quadrupedal model from its Amap division. For the Chinese tech giant, this is not just a new gadget, but an entry into the embodied AI segment, where competition is already high and market and consumer interest is accelerating rapidly.

What Amap Will Show

According to a company representative, Amap is preparing a quadruped that should compete with Unitree's Go lineup. This will be Alibaba's first robotic product of this type. Exact specifications, price, and sales start date have not yet been disclosed, but the announcement itself is significant: Alibaba has long been building an AI ecosystem around cloud, models and services, and is now taking a step into the physical world. For the company, this is also a test of how well its software developments can be transformed into commercial hardware.

"We expect to release our first quadrupedal robot soon,"

Amap stated.

The choice of Amap seems logical. The division is known as Alibaba's mapping and local services platform, meaning it already works with navigation, spatial data and routes — things critical for mobile machines. According to industry publications, the embodied intelligence team within Amap is also studying humanoid robots in parallel. But starting with a robot dog seems more pragmatic: this form factor is easier to bring to market, simpler to position, and easier to use as a testing ground for working out autonomy, orientation, and behavior in real-world environments.

Why the Market Is Already Crowded

Alibaba is entering a category where Unitree and Agibot have already established themselves, with the related Ant Group also involved. At the same time, the long-term market size cannot yet be called proven: there are many expectations around embodied AI, but mass monetization scenarios are still limited. Nevertheless, money is flowing into it quickly. Chinese companies are trying to outpace not only local competitors, but also Tesla and other American players.

The market has momentum from high media coverage: humanoid machines and robot dogs have become a notable part of tech news and generate interest even among those not planning to buy them yet. Demand is largely driven by early enthusiasts and demonstration effects. Unitree and other manufacturers' robots were again in the spotlight at the Spring Festival gala concert: they danced, participated in sketches, and demonstrated acrobatic moves. For startups and corporations, this is a convenient showcase, but it also intensifies competition for people who know how to build such systems. One marker of overheating — UBTech's offer to pay up to 124 million yuan to a chief scientist to accelerate robotics development.

  • Unitree's Go series is named as a competitor for Alibaba
  • Unitree Go2 basic consumer price is around $1,600
  • Amap is simultaneously studying both quadrupeds and humanoids
  • Capital and demand for engineers in Chinese robotics are growing rapidly

Against this backdrop, Alibaba's bet on a quadrupedal robot looks cautious but timely. Humanoids attract more attention, but robot dogs are today more understandable as a product: they are cheaper, more stable, and don't require promising too much at the start. If Amap can connect the hardware component with its own navigation developments and with Alibaba's AI models, the company will get a convenient launch pad before a more ambitious entry into the humanoid segment.

What This Means

Alibaba is ceasing to view AI only as a cloud service, model, or assistant in an app. The entry into embodied AI shows that the next major race for Chinese tech giants is no longer just about text, images and agents, but about machines that can move in the real world. Even if Alibaba's first robot remains a niche device, the launch itself is important: it confirms that physical AI is transforming from a research topic into a product strategy for major platforms.
