Apple to open Siri to Claude and Gemini in iOS 27, turning iPhone into an AI platform

Apple plans to open Siri to third-party AI assistants in iOS 27. If a user has Claude, Gemini or other compatible apps installed, requests can be sent through Siri directly. At the same time, the company is preparing a new Siri interface, a standalone app, conversation history, and a broader role for the iPhone as a platform for AI services across all compatible devices.

Apple is preparing one of the sharpest turns in Siri's history: in iOS 27, the assistant is expected to work not only with ChatGPT but with other external AI services as well. If the plans do not change, Apple will show this approach as early as 8 June 2026 at WWDC and make the iPhone a showcase for several models at once.

How Siri will be opened up

Siri can already pass some requests to ChatGPT when its built-in capabilities fall short. In iOS 27, according to available information, Apple is expanding this scheme: users will be able to connect other AI apps installed from the App Store. If an iPhone has Claude, Gemini or another compatible service, Siri will be able to route a request there straight from its own interface, without launching the app separately or switching manually.

A new Extensions section is expected to appear in the Apple Intelligence and Siri settings. Through it, users will be able to choose which services are connected and which one to use for particular types of tasks. This is not a single button for a couple of partners but a more universal mechanism that Apple is preparing for iPhone, iPad and Mac at once. It moves Siri closer to the role of a system gateway between the device and external AI models.

  • Support for this scheme not only on iPhone but also on iPad and Mac
  • A dedicated Extensions section as a future catalog of AI integrations

A new look for Siri

Opening Siri to outside models is only part of a larger update. Apple is also building what is effectively a new version of the assistant, with a standalone app, text and voice modes, conversation history, and an interface closer to modern chatbots. iOS 27 test builds reportedly include a new way of talking to Siri that removes the feel of the old voice assistant and brings it closer to ChatGPT or Gemini.

The system may also get an Ask Siri button inside apps and a Write with Siri command above the keyboard. That would mean Siri can be summoned not only by voice or by holding the side button, but directly from the context of the current task: a piece of text, an email, a photo or an open window.

Apple is also still developing its own updated Siri and, according to industry reports, may rely on Gemini models as the underlying technology for the conversational layer.

Why Apple is doing it

For Apple, this is an admission of a new reality: competition in AI moves too fast to tie Siri to in-house models alone. While OpenAI, Google and Anthropic ship more visible consumer products, Apple is betting not only on the model but on control of the entry point. If millions of users ask questions through Siri, Apple decides which service sits between the person and the answer.

There is also a financial logic. If third-party AI subscriptions are purchased through the Apple ecosystem, the company can earn from distributing these services the same way it has long earned from apps and in-app purchases. In addition, an open Siri reduces dependence on a single partner: ChatGPT's current exclusivity is effectively ending, and the iPhone becomes a venue where several AI companies compete for the user's attention.

What it means

If Apple really delivers this scenario, Siri will stop being the weak link in the ecosystem and become a universal interface to different AI models. For users, that means more choice and less lock-in to one provider. For the market, it signals that the battle of AI assistants is shifting to the level of the operating system and mobile platform, where the winner is not only whoever has the best algorithm but whoever controls the device.
