OpenAI releases GPT-5.5, its smartest model yet for code and multistep tasks

OpenAI has released GPT-5.5, the next step after GPT-5.4, which shipped just a month ago. The company calls it its smartest and most intuitive model to date. GPT-5.5 can handle complex multistep tasks on its own: it plans the work, uses tools, checks results and keeps going without extra prompting. It is particularly strong at debugging code, online research and working across several services at once.

OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.5, the latest iteration of its flagship language model, which the company calls its smartest and most intuitive product to date. The release came just a month after GPT-5.4, a clear sign of the pace at which OpenAI is pushing toward a fundamentally new way of working with a computer.

The key novelty in GPT-5.5 is sharply improved autonomy on complex compound tasks. The company says openly that instead of guiding the model by the hand at every step, users can now simply give it a tangled, multistage request and it will handle it on its own. GPT-5.5 can plan a sequence of actions, call the right tools, check intermediate results, find a way out of ambiguous situations and keep working without additional prompts. By OpenAI's own description, this is no longer an assistant that needs precise step-by-step instructions but a full-fledged executor that can see a job through where earlier models lost the thread or needed human intervention.

OpenAI singles out several key areas where GPT-5.5 performs best. The first is software development: writing code from scratch, debugging it, finding and fixing errors, at a level useful to professional engineers and not only beginners. The second is online research: the model searches for information in real time, aggregates data from different sources and delivers a structured summary. The third is work with office documents: building spreadsheets, writing reports, editing text files. The fourth is cross-platform work, where a task requires switching between several tools or services. This last capability is what sets GPT-5.5 apart from a simple chatbot: the model can build pipelines of actions rather than just generate text in response to a single request.

The release fits OpenAI's consistent strategy of moving from conversational assistants to full-fledged AI agents. The company is steadily giving its models the ability to act: execute operations, use a browser, write and run code, manage files and interact with third-party services. GPT-5.5 is another point on that path. The official wording, "the next step toward a new way of working with a computer," is not marketing rhetoric but a direct description of a direction OpenAI has pursued for several years.

The update rhythm is telling: GPT-5.4 came out in March 2026, and GPT-5.5 followed in April. A few years ago, major iterations were separated by quarters or half-years. The faster release cycle points to two things at once: inside the company, a stream of continuous improvements is in place, and outside it, competitive pressure from Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Mistral and Chinese players such as DeepSeek leaves no room to slow down. The result is that users get updated models almost monthly, but it becomes harder to track what exactly has changed and how much it matters in practice.

The very idea of a model that does not need steering is not just technical progress but a change in the user contract. Earlier generations taught people to word their requests carefully, break big tasks into small ones and check every step. GPT-5.5 claims to take that operational load on itself. This could potentially open AI tools to an audience that previously lacked the patience or technical literacy to use them effectively.

For developers and business users, GPT-5.5 means the ability to delegate entire workflows that used to require several iterations and manual stitching of results. Preparing an analytical report, debugging a script, collecting data from several online sources and laying it all out in a spreadsheet: the model is supposed to handle such a scenario in a single session. How well this promised autonomy works in practice, and where its real limits lie, will be shown by user tests and independent benchmarks in the coming weeks.

GPT-5.5 is already available in ChatGPT and through the OpenAI API.
