Chinese humanoid robot runs a half marathon in 50 minutes, beating the world record

In a suburb of Beijing, a humanoid robot ran a half marathon in 50 minutes 26 seconds, 7 minutes faster than the current men's world record. This is not just a sporting record: a two-legged machine covered 21 km under real course conditions, confirming that China has firmly taken a leading position in humanoid robot development. The run was part of a competition featuring several humanoid robots from different Chinese companies.

On Sunday morning in a suburb of Beijing, a red humanoid robot finished a half marathon in 50 minutes 26 seconds. For comparison, the men's world record for the distance is 57 minutes 31 seconds. The machine beat the best human on the planet by about seven minutes. The news spread across global media almost instantly as a vivid illustration of how fast China is moving in robotics.

The run took place as part of an organized competition with several humanoid robots from different Chinese companies. The half marathon course, 21.0975 kilometers, demands not only speed but also endurance, stability on uneven surfaces and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. The red robot handled all of it without stopping and without falling.

Context matters: running is much harder for robots than it looks. Bipedal locomotion is one of the toughest engineering problems in robotics. A human unconsciously adjusts balance thousands of times a second, adapts to terrain and distributes load. For a robot, every step is a real-time optimization problem involving dozens of degrees of freedom, controllers, sensors and neural networks. That the machine not only completed the distance but posted a time faster than the world record points to a qualitative leap in motion control systems.

China has made humanoid robotics a national priority. In 2023, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a roadmap: serial production of humanoid robots by 2025 and a significant share of the global market by 2027. Dozens of companies, including Unitree, Fourier Intelligence, UBTECH and others, are competing actively for the lead. State subsidies, closed markets for testing technology and a huge pool of engineering talent create conditions that are hard to replicate elsewhere.

American and European companies are not standing still either: Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Agility Robotics and Tesla with Optimus are moving in a similar direction. But the pace China has shown over the past two years is forcing analysts to revise their forecasts. In 2022, the horizon for commercial humanoids was estimated at 10-15 years; now the talk is of 3-5 years until the first real industrial applications.

A half marathon is a harsh stress test. Prolonged continuous load tests the mechanics, batteries and software at the same time. Fifty minutes of running without overheating, without losing balance and without critical failures is a reliability check close to a real production scenario. A robot that can run a half marathon will very likely also withstand eight hours on a warehouse conveyor.

The horizon for humanoid robots entering commercial use is closing fast. Logistics, manufacturing, construction and elder care are industries that have long waited for a solution to labor shortages. The Beijing race is another signal that physical AI is ceasing to be science fiction and becoming engineering reality.
