Snowflake updates its AI platforms for business users and developers

Snowflake is developing two AI tracks: Snowflake Intelligence for business users without technical training, and Cortex Code for developers and data engineers. The goal is to keep customers inside the ecosystem and give them AI tools where their data already lives, without moving it to third-party platforms.

Snowflake is betting on two parallel AI tracks inside its platform: Snowflake Intelligence for a broad audience of business users and Cortex Code for developers and technical teams. The company is expanding both lines to keep customers from moving to standalone AI tools outside the Snowflake ecosystem.

Snowflake Intelligence is positioned as a tool for employees without deep technical knowledge: analysts, managers and data specialists who need access to AI capabilities without writing code. The product lets users work with corporate data stored in Snowflake through a natural-language interface. It is an attempt to lower the barrier to entry: companies invest in Snowflake as a data platform, and the same data should now be available for AI queries without having to move it into external systems.

Cortex Code, in turn, targets developers and engineers. It is a lower-level toolkit: models, APIs and the ability to embed AI functions into applications and pipelines directly inside Snowflake's infrastructure. Cortex Code lets teams build their own AI solutions without leaving the ecosystem, which reduces operational complexity and removes the need to synchronize data across several platforms.

Splitting the offering into two products is a carefully calculated strategic move. Snowflake has long fought to remain the central data repository for enterprise customers. As AI tools from major labs have grown in popularity, a real threat has emerged: companies may start moving data out of Snowflake into specialized AI platforms. Snowflake Intelligence and Cortex Code are the answer to that risk: don't go elsewhere for AI, use AI where your data already sits.

Over the past two years, Snowflake has steadily built up its AI capabilities. The Cortex brand includes built-in models for summarization, classification, semantic search and text generation. Cortex Analyst lets users ask questions about their data in natural language. Snowflake Arctic is the company's own open-weight model. The expansion of Snowflake Intelligence and Cortex Code looks like the next step in consolidation: not a set of scattered features, but packaged products with a clear target audience.

This matters for the market for several reasons. First, it signals that enterprise AI is maturing. When major data platforms start building differentiated AI products for different roles (business versus developers), it means that demand for AI in the corporate sector is no longer uniform. Second, it increases competitive pressure on specialized platforms. Databricks, Google BigQuery and Microsoft Fabric are moving in a similar direction, and Snowflake cannot afford to fall behind.

For customers already working in the Snowflake ecosystem, the expansion means an easier and cheaper move to AI tools. For those still choosing a data platform, a built-in AI layer is becoming an increasingly weighty argument when evaluating vendors.
