Sam Altman Leaves Helion's Board as OpenAI Power Talks Heat Up

Sam Altman is stepping down as chairman of the board at fusion startup Helion. The trigger is active negotiations over a major deal: Helion plans to sell 12.5% of its electrical capacity to OpenAI. The move is a direct consequence of the AI industry's acute energy shortage, and another sign that the biggest tech companies are betting on fusion power as a long-term solution.

Sam Altman is stepping down as chairman of the board at fusion startup Helion, in the middle of negotiations over an unprecedented deal: the company intends to sell 12.5% of its electrical capacity to OpenAI.

Helion Energy is one of the most capital-intensive startups in the history of the energy industry. The company is developing a fusion reactor based on a reaction between deuterium and helium-3. In 2021, Helion raised $500 million from Altman Investments, Sam Altman's personal fund, and Altman has chaired the startup's board ever since. In 2023, the company signed a preliminary agreement with Microsoft: the major tech investor committed to buying electricity from Helion starting in 2028, provided the reactor is up and running on schedule.

Now OpenAI itself intends to join that club. According to TechCrunch's sources, the companies are negotiating a contract under which OpenAI would get access to 12.5% of the power Helion generates. The detail matters: growing demand for compute to train and run large language models has made electricity one of the AI industry's scarcest resources.

Altman's exit from Helion's board looks like a forced move. US law sharply limits the ability of senior executives to influence the commercial decisions of companies where they also hold management positions. By staying on Helion's board while OpenAI negotiated to buy its power, Altman risked a conflict of interest. Leaving removes that conflict, and it also signals that the deal is close to completion.

For Helion, a partnership with OpenAI is another way to bolster the project's commercial credibility until the reactor actually starts producing electricity. The startup has not yet launched a single commercial power unit: its working prototype, Polaris, is in testing, and the timeline for industrial launch has slipped several times. Contracts with major buyers such as Microsoft and OpenAI help the company hold investor interest and build an order book before it reaches the market.

The largest AI companies face an acute shortage of cheap, reliable electricity. Data centers consume ever more power, traditional grids cannot keep up with the growing load, and renewable sources deliver unstable generation. If the promises of Helion and competitors such as Commonwealth Fusion Systems prove realistic, fusion could give the AI industry exactly what it is looking for: a nearly unlimited, carbon-neutral source of baseload power.

For now, this is a bet on the future. Neither Helion nor any other fusion startup has yet demonstrated an energy output that exceeds the energy needed to initiate the reaction. A commercial launch in 2028 is an ambitious but still conditional horizon. Even so, OpenAI's readiness to sign a power purchase agreement suggests that the AI market's biggest player is seriously considering fusion as part of its long-term energy strategy.

Altman's departure from Helion's board is a small corporate maneuver, but it highlights an important trend: AI companies are ceasing to be mere consumers of energy and are starting to actively shape the energy landscape. When the leading developer of language models negotiates directly with a fusion startup, it changes not only the structure of the electricity market but also the horizon of expectations for the entire industry.
