Webtoon launches AI translation into 7 languages for Canvas indie creators

Webtoon is updating Canvas, its platform for independent comic creators. The headline feature is an AI translator that will let creators localize their manga into 7 languages: English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese and German. The tool is in beta and is being prepared for launch. Beyond translation, Canvas will get expanded audience analytics and new monetization tools, so creators can earn from a global audience without an editorial contract.

Webtoon has announced a major update to Canvas, its platform for independent comic creators. The update centers on three areas: AI tools for content localization, expanded audience analytics and new monetization mechanics. The stated goal is to help creators build a global audience and earn more without waiting for a contract with the platform's editorial team.

The main new feature is an AI translator for scripts. With it, manga artists publishing on Canvas will be able to localize their stories into seven languages at once: English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese and German. The tool is currently in beta testing. Webtoon has not yet disclosed technical details, so it is unknown whether this is an in-house language model or one from a third-party partner. The company said only that the translation will cover the text of the comic.

The choice of languages for the beta is telling. Indonesian and Thai on the list point to a priority: Southeast Asia is where Canvas has traditionally had a strong base of independent creators, and creators from the region have historically faced the sharpest language barrier. Spanish, French and German are logical large markets for expanding the reach of existing works.

Canvas has always played a special role in the Webtoon ecosystem. While the main platform works with professional creators under editorial contracts, Canvas has been an open venue for those who are just building an audience. For creators writing in niche languages, the language barrier remained a serious obstacle: to reach English-speaking readers, they needed either a professional translator or a bilingual partner. AI translation theoretically removes that barrier, although the accuracy of machine translation for manga, with its specific slang, sound effects and cultural references, remains to be tested in practice.

The second part of the update is analytics. Webtoon is adding tools meant to help creators better understand who reads their work and how. The company has not yet disclosed details: it is unclear whether this will be basic traffic statistics or deeper behavioral analysis, such as where readers drop a series, which chapters get the greatest reach and where traffic comes from. The mere arrival of analytics tools on Canvas signals an intent to compete with other platforms not just on reach, but on value to creators.

The third part of the update concerns monetization. Webtoon has not yet announced details. Most likely it is a standard toolkit: creator subscriptions, paid chapters or voluntary donations. Historically, Canvas offered minimal options for direct earnings, and the main path to income ran through an editorial contract. The update is clearly intended to change that model.

For creators in Indonesia, Thailand or other smaller language markets, the changes could be significant. Access to a potentially multimillion-strong audience without translation costs is a fundamentally different economy. If the quality of AI localization proves sufficient for the genre, the barrier to entering the international market will fall almost to zero. That, apparently, is Webtoon's main bet: give growth tools to everyone, not only to those the editors happen to notice.

Amid growing competition from Tapas, LINE Manga and other platforms, and the emergence of AI generators that can produce comics without an artist, Webtoon is making a deliberate choice: to strengthen creators with technology rather than replace them.

The beta of the translation feature will start soon. The company has not given exact dates for the full launch of the Canvas updates.
