Google Gemini Lets You Import Memory and Chat History From Other AI Assistants
Google Gemini now has tools for moving memory and chat history over from other AI assistants. To import memory, you copy a prompt from Gemini, paste it into your previous AI, then paste the response back into Gemini. The chat history feature accepts exported conversation archives. The update follows a similar one from Anthropic for Claude.

Google Gemini has launched two new desktop features: Import Memory and Import Chat History. They let users quickly move to Gemini everything their previous AI assistant had learned about them.
Until now, switching AI assistants meant starting from scratch: the new assistant knew nothing about your preferences, work context, habits or communication style. Google is now offering a migration mechanism that lowers that barrier.
Import Memory works in a simple way. Gemini gives the user a ready-made prompt to paste into their previous AI, such as ChatGPT or Claude. That assistant generates a structured summary about the user, which is then pasted back into Gemini. After that, Gemini "knows" the basic facts about the person: their preferences, work context and personal details they once shared with the other assistant.
Import Chat History goes further. The user requests a full export of their chats from the previous AI service and uploads the archive directly to Gemini. This transfers not just dry facts about yourself but the full context of past conversations.
Both tools are currently available only in the desktop web version. Google has not said when the features will reach its mobile apps.
The launch is a direct response to a similar move by Anthropic. In early April, the company updated its memory import tool for Claude, making it easier to switch from other platforms. Google reacted quickly: competition for users who have already invested time in "training" their AI assistant is becoming a separate front among the big players.
The trend shows that AI companies increasingly treat accumulated memory and chat history as a user's asset, not as a way to lock them into a platform. Being able to take your data and move it is a step toward greater openness, although the process still requires manual steps and is far from a seamless migration.
