Private capital is backing AI startups directly, bypassing venture funds

Family offices are rewriting the rules: instead of investing through venture funds, they are going into AI startups directly. Arena Private Wealth reports that the number of such deals has multiplied over two years. The average check runs from $1 million to $10 million, and the stages are getting earlier. The fear of missing the "next OpenAI" is outweighing the conservatism of wealthy families.

Private capital is changing the rules of the venture market. Family offices, the management structures of wealthy families, are increasingly investing in AI startups directly, bypassing traditional venture capitalists. Analysts at Arena Private Wealth are tracking the trend: the wave of AI euphoria is fundamentally changing how private investors behave.

Three years ago, family offices preferred to put money into venture funds, which took on deal selection, due diligence and the operational workload. For that, investors paid a double layer of fees: management fee plus carried interest. In return they got a diversified portfolio and professional management.

Today the logic is shifting. The AI boom has produced dozens of startups with valuations from $100 million to several billion dollars in their early rounds. Top deals close fast, and access through funds often arrives 12–18 months late. Investing directly removes that lag.

According to Arena Private Wealth, the number of family offices structuring direct deals in AI companies has multiplied over the past two years. The average check for a single direct investment is $1 million to $10 million. That lets them into rounds that used to be closed to non-institutional capital.

The risk profile is changing too. Family offices used to concentrate on Series B and C, stages with predictable metrics. Now they increasingly take part in Series A and seed rounds. That demands very different expertise: assessing the team, the technology and the market potential before any real revenue appears.

Some family offices hire technical advisers or partner with operators, former founders and engineers from AI companies, to make up for the expertise gap. Others form club deals: several offices pool resources for joint due diligence and to share risk.

The strategy has clear advantages: direct control over allocation, no intermediary fees, the possibility of a board seat, and insider access to subsequent rounds. But the risks are significant. Venture funds spend years building deal flow through networking, reputation and industry connections. A family office without a specialized team will have a much narrower funnel. Early bets in the AI sector also carry concentration risk. Five or six large direct positions make for a different portfolio than a basket of twenty startups inside a fund. One company's failure hits incomparably harder.

Still, the trend is gaining momentum. Arena Private Wealth reports that clients say outright that they do not want to miss the next big AI success. Fear of missing out among wealthy families is arguably at its highest in the past ten years.

What this means for the market as a whole: competition for the best early-stage deals will intensify, AI startups gain an alternative source of capital with more flexible terms, and regulators are starting to look at the growing flow of semi-institutional capital into high-risk companies.

A gold rush rarely ends equally well for everyone. But while the AI wave lasts, private capital clearly intends to be among the first in.
