Poke lets anyone run AI agents over SMS, with no app and no technical know-how

Startup Poke has removed the biggest barrier to AI agents: complexity. Users can now direct agents through ordinary SMS. You text a task, and the agent carries it out. There are no apps, no settings, and no API keys. The company is targeting the 5 billion people who use SMS, a market 50 times larger than ChatGPT's. If it works, the AI revolution will no longer be a privilege of the tech-savvy.

Poke is a startup taking on one of the biggest problems with AI agents: the barrier to entry is too high. Most people don't want to deal with settings, API keys, or yet another chat interface. They just want the task done.

Poke's answer is radically simple: control AI agents with an ordinary text message, with no app, no sign-up, and no technical knowledge required. The concept is disarmingly simple. The user sends a message, and the agent acts on it.

Want to book a table, put together a short report, process some data, or set a reminder for your team? Just type it and hit send. No installs, no tutorials, no permission settings.

In effect, Poke makes an AI agent as accessible as an alarm clock or a text reminder. Poke takes an interface every mobile phone owner already knows, SMS, and plugs the power of modern AI agents into it. That marks a fundamental shift in how AI reaches end users.

Major players such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have spent years competing to build ever-smarter agents, but the interfaces to them have stayed tied to browser chats or programmatic APIs. Poke removes that barrier entirely. The text message is the most universal interface in the history of mass communication: people use it in Silicon Valley and in villages without reliable internet.

The technical complexity hides behind a simple user experience. Poke's system receives an incoming message, works out what the user wants, picks the right agent or chain of agents, completes the task, and sends back the result, all without the user lifting another finger. Depending on the connected integrations, the automation can involve calendars, databases, and external services.

For businesses, this means they can roll out AI tools to employees who will never open ChatGPT but know how to send a text. Field teams, warehouse workers, and staff without regular computer access all become potential users of AI automation. The size of the market Poke is chasing is striking.

More than 5 billion people worldwide use SMS, compared with roughly 100 million active ChatGPT users. If AI agents adopt SMS as their primary interface, the barrier to entry effectively disappears for most of humanity. That matters especially in emerging markets, where far from everyone owns a smartphone, while SMS works on any phone made in the past three decades.

Poke fits into a broader trend toward invisible AI, where artificial intelligence is built into communication channels people already use instead of requiring them to switch to a separate app. WhatsApp bots, voice assistants on phone calls, email AI: all of them move in the same direction, bringing AI to where users already are rather than making users come to AI. Monetization and security remain open questions.

Text messaging offers minimal context and a higher risk of abuse. How Poke handles authentication, limits agent permissions, and protects user data has not yet been disclosed. But the very existence of a product like this reframes the problem: the question is no longer how to teach billions of people to use AI, but how to bring AI to where those billions already are.
