Anthropic's Mythos: Not a Hacker's Super-Weapon, but an Alarm for Developers

Anthropic has released Mythos, and it was immediately labeled a "hacker's super-weapon." Cybersecurity experts see it differently: the main threat is not the power of the AI, but the fact that developers have spent years building products without thinking about protection. The arrival of such a tool raises the stakes for everyone who has been in the habit of putting security off until later.

Anthropic has unveiled Mythos, and the professional community split almost instantly. Some call it a potential "hacker's super-weapon," seeing in AI's ability to reason and automate tasks a direct threat to digital security. Others, whose position matters far more, say the real cybersecurity crisis began long before any language model existed.

Mythos is a new model from Anthropic, a company that specializes in safe AI development. It stands out not only for its performance but for its capacity for complex multi-step reasoning, which is exactly what is needed to analyze vulnerabilities, write exploits or automatically hunt for weak spots in code. Security specialists see it as a dual-use tool: it can be used for defense, but it can also end up in the hands of attackers, lowering the barrier to entry for sophisticated attacks.

However, the key thesis of the research is not about the power of any specific model. Experts point to a systemic weakness: for decades, the software industry has treated security as a task for "later." Millions of lines of code were written without regard for basic security principles. This is no secret to anyone, yet nobody was in a particular hurry to fix it.

The arrival of a powerful AI tool that can find vulnerabilities automatically changes the equation. What used to take an experienced pentester weeks can now be done in hours, and not only by those who defend systems but also by those who attack them.

According to industry research, more than 70% of breaches result from known, long-documented vulnerabilities for which patches have existed for a long time. The problem is not a lack of solutions. The problem is a culture in which security updates are postponed in favor of development speed and shipping new features.

Mythos and similar models may become a catalyst for change, however painful. If automated vulnerability discovery becomes available to anyone who wants it, ignoring security technical debt will become significantly more expensive. Old services running outdated code, startups that "launched now and will do security later," corporate systems with unreleased patches: all of them end up in a higher-risk zone.

On the other hand, the same AI can help with defense. A number of companies already use language models for automated code auditing, vulnerability discovery and security test generation. Anthropic, with its stated focus on safe AI development, could become a leader in precisely this direction, offering a tool for defenders rather than merely a reason for alarm.

The arrival of every powerful new model inevitably raises the same question: whose hands hold the tool?

The alarm around Mythos is not panic but a reminder. Developers and companies that keep putting security off risk becoming the most vulnerable precisely when attack tools are getting cheaper and more accessible. The real challenge is not a specific model, but the habit of treating security as someone else's problem.
