Meta is developing an AI clone of Mark Zuckerberg that could talk to employees and give them feedback in place of the real CEO, the Financial Times reports, citing sources inside the company.

According to the report, the model is being trained on Zuckerberg's images and voice, his manner of speaking, his intonation and his public statements. The aim is an avatar that would help employees "feel more connected to the founder." In effect, it is an attempt to scale one person's presence across an organization of many thousands without his physical participation.

Meta has been experimenting with AI personas for a long time. In 2024, the company gave a live demonstration of what a content creator's digital avatar could look like. If the test with Zuckerberg's own clone goes well, the company plans to open the technology to content creators, who would be able to build their own AI doubles to interact with their audiences.

The experiment fits into Meta's broader AI agent strategy. The company is investing heavily in personalized AI assistants and has already integrated AI features into Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook. A digital double of the CEO is a logical extension of that course, although it raises obvious questions about trust, authenticity and corporate communication.

There are precedents: a number of executives at large companies already use AI to generate texts and reply to emails. But an interactive voice and visual avatar that can react to questions in real time is a qualitatively different level. The line between a "delegation tool" and "impersonation" is blurred here.

If the technology moves beyond Meta and becomes available to ordinary users, it could radically change how public figures, from bloggers to politicians, build relationships with their audiences. The question is whether people will want to talk to a copy when they know the original is not the one in front of them.
