Yelp launched a major update to its AI assistant — the Yelp Assistant chatbot is now positioned as the "hub of the entire app." Users can ask about restaurants, receive personalized recommendations, and book tables right away without leaving the conversation. Everything in one chat.

The company is changing the very logic of the product. Previously, Yelp was search: you enter a query, browse cards, go to the establishment's page. Now the bet is on a conversational interface, where the bot leads the user from question to action.

Essentially, this is an attempt to turn the review aggregator into a concierge platform — analogous to what Travel Assistant does at Google or Perplexity for search.

The update covers several areas. Yelp Assistant can clarify needs in dialogue — for example, ask about allergies or price range preferences — before giving a recommendation. Booking is available directly in the chat through partner integrations. One of the first examples of vertical implementation is booking appointments at salons through the Vagaro service.

The company's key asset in this race is data. Over 20 years, Yelp has accumulated hundreds of millions of reviews, photos, and ratings from real users. This array becomes a training base and context for the AI model, which potentially provides recommendation accuracy unattainable for new players.

At a time when OpenAI, Google, and other major platforms are actively entering local search, this is one of Yelp's few real competitive advantages.

The update looks like a direct response to the threat from general-purpose language models. ChatGPT and Google with AI Overview integration can already answer questions like "where to eat nearby." If a user gets such an answer from a general-purpose assistant, why open Yelp?

The company's answer: offer an AI that not only answers but drives to results — actual booking.

Yelp is not the only vertical platform taking this route. Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Zillow are implementing conversational AI interfaces on top of their own data to varying degrees. The trend is clear: aggregators with historical data monetize it through an AI layer before universal models fully occupy the niche.

The stakes are high for Yelp. The company has long been seeking a growth point after the pandemic and a gradual decline in search share. Transforming the app from "yellow pages with reviews" to an AI assistant that actually helps do something — not just find, but book, reserve, and get confirmation — is a shift in value proposition.

Whether it works depends on the quality of recommendations and the coverage of partner integrations. For now, Yelp Assistant is available to users in the USA. The company promises to expand capabilities throughout 2026.
