Yuan 3.0 Ultra: One Trillion Parameters, Record Efficiency

YuanLab AI has released Yuan 3.0 Ultra, an open multimodal Mixture-of-Experts model with one trillion parameters. Only 68.8 billion parameters are active at any given moment. According to the developers, the total parameter count is 33.3% lower than with previous approaches, while pretraining efficiency has risen by 49%. The model is positioned as a flagship solution for enterprise use and is distributed as open source.

The race for trillion-parameter models is entering a new phase, and the key measure is no longer size but how well a lab uses it. China's YuanLab AI has unveiled Yuan 3.0 Ultra, an open multimodal Mixture-of-Experts model that holds a trillion parameters but activates only 68.8 billion at any moment. Behind the dry numbers lies a real shift in how large language models are built: instead of throwing raw compute at the problem, developers are betting on surgical precision in resource use.

To grasp the scale of the claim, some context helps. Mixture-of-Experts is not new. Google uses it in Gemini, it underpins Mixtral from Mistral AI, and according to a number of leaks, GPT-4 from OpenAI as well.

The idea is that the model consists of many "expert" subnetworks, and only a small fraction of them is activated to handle any given request. This gives the model a huge capacity for knowledge without having to push every token through all of its parameters. Yuan 3.

0 Ultra takes this idea to its logical limit: fewer than seven percent of the trillion parameters work at the same time. By comparison, the ratio of active to total parameters in Mixtral 8x7B was considerably less aggressive.

The claimed efficiency figures are especially notable. According to YuanLab AI, the model's total parameter count is 33.3% lower than in architectures with comparable capabilities, and pretraining efficiency has risen by 49%. That means reaching comparable answer quality takes significantly less compute and training time. At a time when training a single flagship model costs tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, and access to GPU clusters remains a bottleneck for most companies, such a gain is not just a technical achievement but an economic argument.

Multimodality is another important feature of Yuan 3.0 Ultra. The model is positioned as able to work not only with text but with other data types, which makes it suitable for a wide range of enterprise tasks, from analyzing documents with images to complex scenarios that require understanding context across different modalities. The details of the architectural choices behind its multimodality have not yet been fully disclosed, but the very fact that these capabilities have been integrated into a trillion-scale MoE model points to a mature approach.

The decision to release the model openly deserves separate attention. Over the past year and a half, Chinese AI labs have steadily expanded their presence in the open community: DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen, 01.AI's Yi.

All of them release open-weight models, creating a powerful alternative to closed Western systems. Yuan 3.0 Ultra fits this trend but raises the bar: an open-access trillion-parameter MoE model is a challenge not only to commercial competitors but to the whole open AI ecosystem.

The question is whether researchers and companies outside the largest cloud providers can actually deploy and use a model of this scale. Even with "only" 68.8 billion active parameters, inference on a trillion-parameter MoE model requires serious infrastructure for storage and for routing between experts.

For the industry, Yuan 3.0 Ultra is one more confirmation that MoE is becoming the dominant architecture for next-generation models. Dense transformers, where every parameter is active on every call, increasingly look like a wasteful approach from a previous era. The model also sharpens competition between Chinese and American labs: if the claimed efficiency figures are confirmed by independent benchmarks, that will be a strong argument that technological leadership in AI is no longer a Silicon Valley monopoly.

Still, bold claims deserve professional skepticism. Until results on standard benchmarks are published against GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, Gemini Ultra and other flagships, talking about "unmatched efficiency" is premature. The real test of Yuan 3.0 Ultra will begin when the community gets access to the weights and can run an independent evaluation. Only then will it become clear whether this model is a real breakthrough or just another ambitious but overrated release in an overheated race for scale.
