Google Gemini Hits 750 Million Users: Does Quantity Become Quality?

Google has passed 750 million monthly Gemini users. It is a serious signal for the industry: while OpenAI and Anthropic fight for technological leadership, Google is leaning on its main superpower, distribution. Integration into Android, Chrome and Workspace has turned Gemini from a catch-up product into a mass-market default. Despite early reputational stumbles, the numbers speak for themselves. The AI assistant market is no longer a game for enthusiasts; it is becoming a fight for every smartphone owner. The takeaway: Google has shown that, in the long run, owning an ecosystem matters more than initial hype.

Remember the famous "code red" in Google's offices when ChatGPT first appeared? It looked as if the search giant, which had spent years feeding us promises of a bright AI future, had hopelessly missed its own party. Today's figure of 750 million monthly active Gemini users forces a full rethink of those obituaries. This is no longer an attempt to catch a departing train, but a full-on market grab through brute-force distribution that no startup in the world has. Google has finally realized that its main weapon is not just algorithms, but the billions of people who already use its services every day.

The road to this impressive number was, to put it mildly, thorny and full of awkward moments. We all remember the launch of the Bard chatbot, which managed to make a mistake right in its promo video and wiped billions of dollars off the company's market value. Then came the rebrand to Gemini, the model's strange hallucinations when generating historical figures, and endless excuses from management. But while the internet exercised its wit, Google did what it does best: it wired the neural network into every corner of its vast ecosystem. The company simply stopped asking whether you wanted AI and started offering it everywhere you are used to working or relaxing.

Gemini's success is not down to it suddenly becoming smarter than every competitor on the market. The main reason is that users no longer need to go looking for it. It is already waiting for you in Android, offers to rewrite your email in Gmail, and tries to help analyze spreadsheets in Google Sheets. Google simply flipped the reach switch. When you have three billion active Android devices worldwide, getting to 750 million users is not a miracle or the result of brilliant marketing, but inevitable statistics. People take the path of least resistance, and Google has shortened that path as much as possible.

For OpenAI and Anthropic, this report is a very alarming wake-up call. You can win synthetic benchmarks all day and show incredible demos of new models, but the mass-market user is, by nature, rather lazy. They will use the tool that is at hand at the right moment. If the Gemini button is built into the phone's system shell or the browser, installing a separate ChatGPT app becomes an unnecessary step for most people. Google is methodically turning AI from an elite tool for geeks into a basic utility, like running water or electricity.

However, a huge number of users does not always mean genuine loyalty to the product. Such a colossal base also brings enormous responsibility for every mistake, which is now replicated at planetary scale. Google has to constantly balance the speed of rolling out new features against strict safety requirements, which often makes Gemini more cautious and duller than its bolder startup rivals. But the strategy of "capture the market first, fix the brains later" seems to be starting to pay off. Even the most devoted fans of other AI models will not be able to brush such numbers aside.

The takeaway: Google has officially ended its rehabilitation period after the shock of ChatGPT's launch and is now playing from a position of strength. The company is using its ecosystem as a battering ram, and pure AI labs do not yet have an effective counter. Can OpenAI offer anything beyond the raw intelligence of its models, or will distribution once again beat innovation in the long run?
