GitHub Copilot Is No Longer a Monopoly: Claude Is Now Officially in the Mix

GitHub is turning Copilot from a closed product into an open platform. Pro Plus and Enterprise subscribers can now choose between the "native" Copilot, Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex. It is part of the Agent HQ strategy: making GitHub an environment where AI agents live natively. Developers can assign agents to specific tasks or to pull request review. Every request counts against usage limits, but it buys flexibility: Claude 3.5 Sonnet is currently considered the favorite for coding, and GitHub acknowledges this. Microsoft is effectively conceding that one model is not enough for every task, and is betting on an ecosystem rather than a monopoly.

Microsoft and GitHub have done something that seemed unthinkable for a corporate giant a year ago: they voluntarily broke the monopoly of their own model in the main tool of the modern programmer. GitHub Copilot is no longer just a layer on top of GPT; it has become a full-fledged platform. Developers can now pick the "brains" of their AI assistant as easily as they pick a color theme in a code editor. Claude from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI have officially joined the list of available engines, ending the era of exclusivity.

To understand why this is happening now, look at the market. For the past six months the industry has been buzzing over the success of Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Anthropic's model proved so good at reasoning and writing clean code that even the most loyal OpenAI fans began moving to alternative IDEs such as Cursor. GitHub, the historical leader, found itself playing catch-up. Developers no longer want to be locked into a single neural network, however powerful. They want flexibility and the best tool for each specific task.

The new update, called Agent HQ, is GitHub's attempt to become not just a "smart notepad" but a mission control center for an entire army of AI agents. Visual Studio Code, the mobile app and the GitHub web interface now let you switch between models on the fly. This is part of a broader vision of a future in which AI agents are native participants in the development process. You no longer ask a chatbot to "write a function"; you assign an agent to a specific task in the backlog.

The mechanics have become significantly deeper. A developer can now attach a specific agent to a ticket or a pull request. The agent analyzes the whole codebase, understands the context of dependencies and proposes a ready-made solution that can be merged into the project right away. This is a qualitative shift from suggestions in a line of code to autonomous task execution. Of course, such luxury costs money: model selection is available only to subscribers of the Copilot Pro Plus and Copilot Enterprise plans. Each agent action consumes so-called premium requests, which turns AI use into a measurable production resource.

For Microsoft, this move looks like a subtle political game. On one hand, it acknowledges the strength of Anthropic, a direct competitor backed heavily by Amazon and Google. On the other, by keeping developers inside VS Code and GitHub, Microsoft retains control of the infrastructure. It matters less whose model generates the tokens if all development, hosting and deployment pipelines run in its Azure cloud. It is the classic "embrace and extend" strategy, adapted to the AI boom.

It is worth noting that Codex, mentioned in the update, is not simply a return to old roots but an optimized version for those used to the particular response style of OpenAI models. Still, the main attention is on Claude. Integrating Sonnet 3.5 into the GitHub ecosystem makes this alliance the most powerful tool on the market at the moment. It is a direct challenge to all the startups that tried to take market share through multi-model support.

Ultimately, we are watching GitHub turn into an operating system for development, where neural networks are just drivers. Today there are two or three; tomorrow there will be dozens. We may soon see specialized models trained exclusively on security or on optimizing high-load systems. GitHub has laid the foundation for that future by abandoning the idea that a single model can rule them all.

The bottom line: GitHub has stopped fighting reality and acknowledged Claude as the developers' favorite. It is no longer just a service but an open marketplace of AI agents, where Microsoft plans to earn from commissions and infrastructure rather than exclusivity.
