China's Paradox: Markets Surge While Nvidia Challenger Cambricon Plunges
Chinese exchanges are in a festive mood today: the Shanghai and Shenzhen indexes are climbing firmly (+1.29% and +2.19%), and more than 4,800 companies closed in the green. But AI hardware is seeing a strange reshuffle. On one side, makers of optical modules, a key component for data-center connectivity, are setting records: shares of Roboteco and Tongyu Communication hit their daily upper limit. Investors are betting on infrastructure. On the other side, Cambricon, China's main Nvidia competitor, suddenly dropped 9%. The market is clearly shifting money out of the chips themselves and into adjacent technologies and... solar power. It looks as if confidence in fast import substitution for GPUs has wobbled a bit, or someone decided to lock in profits after the hype.

Picture a party where absolutely everyone is dancing, from solar panel makers to small startups, and only the most important guest sits in the corner crying. That is roughly how trading looked today on China's stock market (A-shares). While the Shanghai and Shenzhen indexes painted handsome green candles (or red ones, if you are used to the Chinese color coding for gains), the artificial intelligence sector delivered an unpleasant surprise. The market really did come alive: more than 4,800 stocks closed higher. Investors, tired of prolonged stagnation, bought almost everything. But the devil, as always, is in the details of what exactly they sold to buy all that.
Optics vs. Silicon
The most interesting move came in AI infrastructure. The optical modules sector (Optical Modules), the "pipes" that carry data between servers in data centers, posted explosive growth. Companies such as Roboteco and Tongyu Communication hit their upper limit. It makes sense: no matter whose chips you use, Nvidia or Huawei, you still need miles of high-speed optics to link them into a cluster.
The "brains" themselves, though, ran into trouble. Cambricon, arguably China's best-known public company trying to build an alternative to Nvidia GPUs, fell more than 9%. For a company that symbolizes China's technological sovereignty in AI, this is a painful blow.
Why does it matter?
Cambricon's drop amid a broad rally looks like a warning bell. Usually, when the market rises ("a rising tide lifts all boats"), tech rises too. Here, though, we see a clear rotation of capital. Investors are leaving overheated expectations around the chips themselves and moving into more understandable, down-to-earth assets: the same optics, or even solar power (Photovoltaics), which was also among today's leaders.
Perhaps the market is starting to tire of promises to "catch up and overtake" the H100 and wants to see real profit here and now. Or it may be classic profit-taking ahead of new earnings reports. Either way, the situation shows that blind faith in any "AI Chip" label is ending. Investors are now looking at the real supply chain.
By the way, the banking and oil sectors also slipped, but that matters little to our industry. The main drama is unfolding in hardware.
Bottom line: Euphoria around Chinese AI hardware is becoming selective. Infrastructure (optics) is still "hot", while chipmakers will have to prove themselves with actual shipments rather than presentations. Cambricon got a black mark today. We will see whether it can win it back next week.
