Codex for macOS: OpenAI Turns Your Computer Into a Command Center for Agents

OpenAI has unexpectedly released a Codex app for macOS built on the new GPT-5.2 model. It is not another chatbot but a full multi-agent environment that works directly with your system. The app lets you launch chains of autonomous agents to handle complex tasks, from writing code to in-depth file analysis. The most curious part is that access is free. The company probably wants to gather a body of data on how users interact with AI at the operating-system level before Apple rolls out its own deep integrations. Your terminal no longer just executes commands: it designs and coordinates them.

Remember when simple code autocompletion in an editor felt like magic? Those days are officially over. OpenAI has decided it is time we stop merely chatting with a neural network and start commanding it for real. The new Codex app for macOS, built on the GPT-5.2 model, is not a cosmetic update, nor an attempt to make ChatGPT more convenient. It is a full-scale landing in the holy of holies of every developer and power user: the operating system itself. While Apple cautiously promises a Siri that will someday learn to open emails, OpenAI is handing out tools for building a swarm of autonomous agents right here, right now.

Codex's story has always played out somewhat in the background. First it became the foundation of GitHub Copilot, then it dissolved into the capabilities of GPT-4. Version 5.

2 is a very different beast. The model's architecture is now built for multi-agent work. That means the app does not just generate a chunk of code; it distributes tasks among several virtual entities.

One agent writes the code, another tests it, a third checks compatibility with your current version of macOS. All of this happens inside a single command center with access to the file system and the terminal. That turns your laptop from a passive tool into an active partner that can take a task all the way to completion on its own while you drink your coffee.

Why does this matter right now? We are on the threshold of a shift from LLMs to LAMs, Large Action Models. If neural networks used to be extremely well-read professors, they are now becoming executive directors. After a period of relative quiet and criticism of OpenAI for its secrecy, a release this powerful looks like an attempt to reclaim leadership in the race for interfaces. The company understands that whoever first teaches AI to manage a user's cursor and files effectively will own the new main platform. And given that the Codex app launched on the Mac specifically, OpenAI is aiming at the most loyal and technically savvy audience, seizing the initiative from Cupertino.

The price, or rather its absence, deserves particular attention. OpenAI is giving away access to GPT-5.2-Codex for free, and that should be as worrying as it is pleasing. Nothing in this industry comes for nothing. Most likely, we are free testers and suppliers of priceless data. The company needs to see exactly how people will use agents in a real environment, what errors will arise when working with local files, and where the limits of user trust lie. It is a large-scale experiment in teaching a model to manage the real world, and we are its main guinea pigs. Still, when a tool is this powerful, you accept such terms almost without reading them.

The impact on the industry will be tectonic. Where building a complex application once required a team, Codex now offers an imitation of that team inside a single window. That calls into question the relevance of many narrowly specialized developer tools. Why pay for a dozen subscriptions if one hub from OpenAI covers every need from debugging to deployment? We are entering an era in which the key skill is not writing lines of code but architecting and managing agents. And judging by the first impression of Codex, that era arrived this morning.

The bottom line: OpenAI has effectively unveiled an operating system on top of an operating system. Can Apple answer with something equally capable at the next WWDC, or is the battle for the desktop already lost?
