Claude Code on a Diet: How to Run an AI Programmer for Free, Locally

Claude Code is impressive, but depending on the cloud and paying a steady stream of token bills is a questionable deal for anyone who values privacy and their wallet. The alternative came from an unexpected place: Goose, an agent from Block (formerly Square), paired with Ollama and Qwen models, shows that local AI coding is no longer a toy for geeks. You get full control over your code, no network latency and zero API costs. Of course, open models still have to grow to reach the level of Claude 3.5 Sonnet. But for everyday automation and work on private repositories, this setup already looks like a serious threat to Big Tech's monopoly. The main question: are you ready to spend time on setup for the sake of digital sovereignty?

The dream of an AI that writes your code has finally taken tangible form, but, as usual, with a catch: a monthly subscription. Anthropic's Claude Code is currently considered the gold standard. It is fast, smart and understands project context better than many junior developers.

But you pay for it not only with money but also with privacy, because you send your files to the cloud. While corporations build their walled gardens, the open-source community is methodically assembling tools that let you keep your code on your own SSD. I looked at how a combination of the Goose agent, the Ollama platform and the latest Qwen models works, and the results make you question whether paid subscriptions are worth it.

Some context first. Block, the company run by Jack Dorsey, did not release Goose as just another wrapper around a chat window. It is a full orchestrator that can use the terminal, read files and run commands. The magic happens when you disconnect it from paid APIs and connect it to Ollama. The "brains" here are the Qwen-Coder series of models. These models from the team at Alibaba Cloud have suddenly become the "killer" everyone was waiting for: they post phenomenal results in coding benchmarks and come close to closed proprietary solutions.

Why does this matter right now? We are passing a tipping point where local models are no longer "dumb versions of GPT-4." On good hardware (especially Apple M-series chips or NVIDIA cards with a decent amount of memory), Goose and Qwen run almost instantly. You don't wait for a request to travel to a server in Virginia and back. You don't feel "token anxiety," where every failed attempt by the model costs you a few cents. It gives you complete freedom to experiment: you can make the agent rewrite the entire project ten times just because you didn't like the variable naming style.

Of course, there is a downside. Claude 3.5 Sonnet is still better at complex architectural logic and less likely to fall into endless self-correction loops. A local agent sometimes feels like a very diligent but not always attentive intern: it can get confused about file paths or suggest a solution that worked three years ago. However, open source is iterating so fast that the gap narrows every month. Running AI locally used to require a master's degree in system administration. Now it takes a couple of commands in the terminal.

The bottom line: the era of cloud AI programmers' monopoly is coming to an end. For companies with strict security requirements, and for solo developers who don't want to feed the Silicon Valley giants, local agents have become a real working tool. Are you ready to trust your production to a model that lives entirely on your laptop?
