Alibaba's new AI sandbox: why the giant needs Kechuang Kezao

Alibaba Group keeps splitting up its structure, this time with a new technology company in Hangzhou called Kechuang Kezao. Don't be fooled by the modest registered capital of 1 million yuan: the company's focus on foundational and applied AI software points to a narrowly specialized testing ground for new algorithms. The owners are key Alibaba advertising and network entities. The move fits neatly into the "1+6+N" strategy, under which every unit is supposed to become as autonomous and fast as possible in the race against Baidu and Tencent.

Alibaba is once again doing what it does best: multiplying entities to stay nimble. While Western analysts speculate about how powerful the next iteration of its language model will be, a new company called Kechuang Kezao has quietly appeared in Hangzhou. The name sounds ambitious, something like "able to create and build," but behind the sign sits a thoroughly pragmatic calculation.

If you thought the giant had settled down after its sweeping restructuring, this new subsidiary proves otherwise. Let's look at the facts. By the standards of Jack Ma's empire, registered capital of one million yuan isn't even a company party budget; it's closer to coffee money for the engineering team.

The list of business activities, however, deserves a closer look. It covers applied AI software development, foundational software work, and data storage services. In effect, Alibaba is building yet another testing ground for technologies that will become the foundation of its cloud services tomorrow.

Why now, and why in this form? Since the company moved to its "1+6+N" governance model, the parent entity has fully turned into an incubator. Instead of bloating headcount inside existing departments, it makes far more sense to spin up compact, legally separate units.

That delivers exactly the agility corporate leviathans so badly lack. In a world where new neural network architectures appear every month, any bureaucratic delay means losing. Notably, the founders are Alibaba (China) Network Technology and Hangzhou Alibaba Advertising, a classic pairing for internal tech projects.

Hangzhou remains the empire's "capital," and setting up a new growth point here signals that the company has no plans to relocate its brain trust, despite all the regulatory storms of recent years. The new Kechuang Kezao entity will most likely handle the "groundwork": building the foundational tools that high-profile consumer products will later run on. Why should we care?

Because moves that look small at first glance often precede the launch of new infrastructure. Foundational AI software isn't about chatbots that generate images. It's about the architecture behind cloud computing and complex data-processing algorithms for retail and logistics.

Alibaba is clearly laying the groundwork for something bigger than yet another mobile app update. We may be looking at a future supplier for China's public sector, or a source of specialized tools that need to be kept away from the main cloud platforms because of sanctions risks. Either way, Kechuang Kezao's arrival is a sign that Alibaba is shifting to small strike-team tactics.

It needs to code fast, test fast, and kill failed projects fast without exposing the core brand. Amid fierce competition with Baidu and its Ernie model, as well as Tencent's Hunyuan, this strategy looks like the only right one. We'll be watching to see how this "million-yuan" startup grows into something bigger.

Bottom line: Alibaba keeps splitting up its structure to move faster on foundational AI software. Have Claude and GPT forced the Chinese to run twice as fast?
