The tech world is facing a new problem: a rapid surge in RAM prices. This component, essential for the operation of virtually every electronic device — from smartphones to servers — has suddenly become scarce. The reason lies in the growing appetite of AI companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta, whose massive data centers demand ever-increasing amounts of memory.

The largest RAM manufacturers, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, have responded to this explosive demand by redirecting their production capacity toward more lucrative contracts with AI giants. This has led to reduced RAM supplies for the consumer market, immediately driving prices up. The cost of RAM kits for PC builds, as well as for manufacturers of laptops, smartphones, and gaming consoles, has surged sharply.

Some companies, such as Raspberry Pi and Framework, have already announced price increases on their products. Others, including Dell, Asus, Acer, Xiaomi, and Nothing, are warning of upcoming hikes. The situation is compounded by forecasts from analysts at International Data Corporation (IDC), who predict the RAM shortage could last until 2027. This means consumers should brace for further increases in electronics prices.

Micron's decision to shut down its consumer-oriented Crucial brand is yet another sign of this trend. The company explains the move as an effort to "help" consumers, but it is clear that Micron simply wants to redirect its resources toward a more profitable market segment — supplying RAM and SSDs to AI companies. This decision will certainly not go unnoticed and will have an impact on the consumer electronics market.

The effects of the RAM shortage are being felt everywhere. RAM kit prices have tripled in just three months. Some retailers have even begun selling "ready-made" PCs without RAM in an attempt to at least partially reduce costs. The situation is so severe that some are comparing selling RAM to selling lobsters — a nod to the idea that this component has become a luxury item.

For users, this means that upgrading a computer or buying a new smartphone will cost significantly more. Device manufacturers will be forced to raise prices to offset the increased cost of RAM. In the long run, this could slow the pace of growth in the consumer electronics market, as consumers delay purchasing new devices due to high prices.

In conclusion, the global RAM shortage caused by manufacturers pivoting toward AI companies represents a serious problem for both consumers and electronics makers. In the coming years, further increases in RAM prices — and consequently in the prices of all devices that use it — should be expected. This situation underscores the growing importance of the AI industry and its impact on other sectors of the economy.
