Free Open-Source AutoCAD Alternative for 2D and 3D Appears on GitHub

A free, open-source AutoCAD alternative has been published on GitHub. The program builds 2D drawings and 3D models, and it can be used without a license or subscription. For comparison, Autodesk has shipped AutoCAD since 1982, and an annual subscription costs about 2000 dollars. The CNews announcement does not give the project's name, its license, or any data on DWG support, so it is too early to judge how mature the product is. • Free and open source • 2D drawings and 3D modeling claimed • The key test: working with DWG and real projects

A project has been published on GitHub that its authors and the press call a free alternative to AutoCAD. It can build 2D drawings and 3D models, and its source code is open to everyone. Autodesk's original is nearly 44 years old: the first version shipped in December 1982. An annual subscription costs about 2000 dollars per seat. The CNews report is short, so it does not disclose the project's name, its license, or its feature list. Below, we cover what is known and how to evaluate releases like this.

A market that has long waited for a replacement

For decades, AutoCAD has been the standard for drawings in architecture, mechanical engineering, and construction. Its main asset today is neither its interface nor its set of commands. It is the DWG format, which holds a huge archive of design documentation around the world. The format is closed, and that is exactly what keeps users on paid subscriptions.

There is no shortage of open alternatives. FreeCAD has been in development since the early 2000s and is distributed under the LGPL license. LibreCAD and QCAD cover 2D drafting. In Russia, since Autodesk's departure in 2022, demand has been shifting to KOMPAS-3D from ASCON and nanoCAD from Nanosoft. Each solution has a weak spot: either incomplete DWG support, or a difficult transition for teams used to AutoCAD.

What is known about the new project

Very little can be confirmed from the published information:

  • platform: GitHub, source code is open;
  • features: 2D drawings and 3D models;
  • cost: free, no subscription;
  • not disclosed: the name, license type, DWG and DXF support, supported platforms, number of contributors, and commit history.

Without these details, the bold comparison to AutoCAD remains marketing for now. A free CAD program is not news in itself. It becomes news if the project can open other people's files without losses and handle production workloads.

How to evaluate such releases

A mature CAD project shows several signs, and all of them can be checked quickly.

First: file format support. Without reliable DWG and DXF import and export, a project is fine for personal work but not for contractors and approval workflows. Second: the license. GPL, LGPL, MIT, and Apache each affect embedding in commercial products differently. Third: the geometry kernel. Many open CAD programs build on OpenCascade, and its capabilities determine how reliable Boolean operations are and how fast the software runs on complex assemblies. Fourth: how alive the repository is, meaning regular commits, closed issues, and documentation.

The announcement says nothing about neural networks, and AI features cannot be attributed to the project. Still, open CAD is interesting in this context too. Its source code can be connected to assistants that generate drawings from a text description and write parametric modeling scripts. In closed systems, such experiments run into licenses and API restrictions.

What engineers and studios should do

Do not migrate working projects right away. A small pilot makes more sense. Take 3–5 real DWG files of varying complexity, with blocks, layers, dimensions, and external references, and open them in the new editor. Then check printing, scales, and export back to DWG. If the files come through without distortion, you can start using the project for internal tasks: sketches, student work, small models. If not, bookmark the repository and come back in six months, when it will be clear how the project is developing.

For companies that spend hundreds of thousands of rubles or thousands of dollars a year on licenses, even a partial replacement can deliver noticeable savings. But it is justified only once the project proves its compatibility in practice.
