Image Mixer blends multiple images into a single input for Stable Diffusion img2img
RunPod has published a practical guide to Image Mixer for Stable Diffusion. The tool blends several source images into a single hybrid input, which then goes into img2img. The model gets a composite of several references instead of just one: for example, a portrait, a texture and a color scheme. The guide walks through installation and a basic workflow, and suggests running everything on a rented GPU. • Several images instead of a single reference • Blending happens before img2img, not after • The strength parameter, from 0 to 1, sets how far the output departs from the source

RunPod has released a guide to Image Mixer, a tool that blends several source images into one hybrid input and only then passes it to img2img in Stable Diffusion. Instead of a single reference, the model receives a composite. The strength parameter, in the range from 0 to 1, determines how much of that composite survives in the result. This is a guide to an existing tool, not the announcement of a new model, but the workflow is practical and reproducible.
What changes in standard img2img
Classic img2img takes one image and a text prompt. The model adds noise to the image, then removes it, guided by the description. The limitation is obvious. If the look you want sits somewhere between two or three references, you either have to describe it in words or spend a long time hunting for one perfect frame.
Image Mixer adds a step before generation. You take several images, for example a portrait, a fabric texture and a frame with the right palette, and get one blended source. From there, the regular pipeline takes over. Blending and denoising happen at separate stages, so you can tune each one on its own.
RunPod's short summary gives no details about the internal mechanics. Known implementations of similar mixers rely on image embeddings rather than pixel-by-pixel overlay. In practice, this means the result looks more like a blend of concepts than a collage of two layers.
What you can configure
The guide covers installation and the order of operations. The set of parameters is typical for Stable Diffusion:
- Input images: several sources, with the contribution of each adjustable.
- Strength: from 0 to 1. Low values preserve the composition of the blended input; high values hand control to the model and the prompt.
- Prompt: refines the result, but is not required for a first run.
- Seed: fixed, so you can compare variants fairly.
- Number of steps and guidance scale: the standard controls for quality and adherence to the description.
- Hardware: a GPU in the RunPod cloud, billed by usage time.
Where it helps
The biggest gains go to tasks where the result is assembled from several visual sources. That includes mood boards for concept art, style exploration for illustrations, and quick variants of packaging or interiors. Previously, a designer either picked a single reference by hand or built a collage in a graphics editor. Now the collage becomes a parameter.
The pairing with a cloud GPU is not accidental either. Running dozens of variants at different strength values is slow on a local card with limited memory. A rented accelerator removes that constraint, and you pay only for the time it runs.
Where to start in practice
Here is the sequence for a first experiment:
1. Take two or three images of comparable size and different nature: an object, a texture, a palette. 2. Run the blend with equal weights, then shift the weight of one source at a time and watch how the hybrid changes. 3. Pass the result to img2img with a medium strength, around 0.4–0.6. This is a starting point from general practice, not a recommendation from the guide. From there, move in both directions. 4. Fix the seed and change one parameter per run. Otherwise you will not know what produced the effect. 5. Check the licenses on your source images. A hybrid of other people's work does not resolve copyright questions, especially in commercial projects.
If you already work with Stable Diffusion, Image Mixer does not require a new process. It adds one preliminary step that saves time on hunting for references.
