Google launches $180 Fitbit Edge band with a week of battery life

Google has announced the Fitbit Edge fitness band. It has an oval 1.34-inch OLED display and a replaceable battery. The device runs for up to seven days on a single charge, and five minutes on the charger buys another day. It costs $180, or about 15,000 rubles. The form factor mirrors slim bands like the Xiaomi Smart Band, but the price is noticeably higher. • Display: OLED, 1.34 inches, oval • Battery life: up to 7 days, +1 day from a 5-minute charge • Key feature: replaceable battery

Google has announced the Fitbit Edge fitness band: an oval 1.34-inch OLED display, a replaceable battery, and up to seven days of runtime on a single charge. Five minutes on the charger adds roughly another day. It costs $180, or about 15,000 rubles at the exchange rate. The body is elongated and narrow, like the Xiaomi Smart Band, rather than square like most smartwatches.

What we know about the Fitbit Edge

The official specs fit in a short list:

  • Display: OLED, 1.34 inches, oval shape
  • Battery life: up to seven days on a single charge
  • Fast charging: five minutes gives about another day of use
  • Battery: replaceable
  • Price: $180 (about 15,000 rubles)

The key detail here is not the display or the battery-life figure but the replaceable battery. That is rare in wearables. A lithium-ion cell in a band that touches sweat every day and goes through hundreds of charge cycles typically degrades within two to three years. After that, the device either stays tethered to an outlet or gets replaced outright. If the battery can be swapped, it no longer determines how long the band lasts. The announcement does not say how the replacement works, whether users can do it themselves or must go through a service, or how much a spare battery costs.

The "a week plus five minutes" combination is also practical. A band that someone forgot to charge stops collecting sleep and activity data. A short top-up before leaving the house solves that problem better than another hundred milliamp-hours would.

Why the Xiaomi-style shape

Slim bands with an elongated display became a segment of their own largely thanks to the Xiaomi Smart Band line. They are light, do not get in the way during sleep, and do not try to replace a smartphone. Xiaomi has traditionally kept such models in the range of a few tens of dollars. Google is entering the same form factor, but at $180.

This is not new territory for Fitbit. Google bought the company in 2021, and the Charge line, built on a similar idea, cost about $160 at the launch of its sixth generation in 2023. The Edge is more expensive, and the announcement offers three arguments for the difference: the display, the replaceable battery, and fast charging. The market will decide whether that is enough.

What the available materials do not include: a list of sensors, details of the app, the terms of Fitbit service subscriptions, whether there are any AI features, and release dates by region. Without these, it is too early to compare the Edge with competitors on features.

Who should care and what to watch for

The 15,000-ruble figure needs a caveat: it is a conversion of the dollar price, not a retail price in Russia. Official availability of Google devices in the country is limited, so the actual cost when buying through intermediaries will be higher.

Before buying, it is worth checking four things:

  • heart-rate monitor and sleep sensor accuracy in independent tests, not the manufacturer's promises
  • whether a paid subscription is required for the full feature set
  • the price and availability of a spare battery, otherwise replaceability remains theoretical
  • how it works with your smartphone: Fitbit traditionally pairs best with Android and the Google ecosystem

If your main requirements are a week without an outlet and a band you can service rather than throw away, the Edge looks sensible. If all you need is a step and sleep counter, cheaper Xiaomi models will do the job just as well. The first reviews and the price of the spare battery will show the Edge's real value.
