OpenAI adds education plugins to ChatGPT Work and Codex for teachers and students

OpenAI has launched education plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex. The tools target three audiences: K–12 teachers, college and university instructors, and students. Codex helps students learn to program through a dialogue with an agent, while ChatGPT Work helps organize coursework with access controls and rules for AI use.

OpenAI has announced new plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex built for education. The tools are meant for school teachers, college and university instructors, and students who want to learn, teach, research, and build their own projects. The update touches two of the company's products at once: ChatGPT Work, its team platform, and Codex, its coding agent.

Who the new plugins are for

The education tools are designed for three groups of users:

  • K–12 teachers (from elementary through high school): lesson planning, generating explanations, and adapting materials to different student levels
  • College and university instructors: support for research work, course structuring, and management of student projects
  • Students: independent study, work with sources, and building software through Codex

Education turned out to be one of the first sectors where ChatGPT became a mass-market tool organically, before any education-specific products existed. Teachers and students adapted the general-purpose chatbot to learning tasks on their own, often without a clear sense of where the acceptable limits of AI use in the classroom lie. The new plugins aim to close that gap by giving educational institutions structure and official use cases.

According to

OpenAI's official blog, the plugins will help users "learn, teach, research, and build," covering the full path from student to researcher and developer.

Why Codex is moving into education

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It can do more than write code: it can also debug errors, explain the logic behind solutions, and suggest alternative approaches. In an educational setting, this changes how programming is taught. Instead of passively reading documentation, a student works in dialogue with an agent that tailors its explanations to the specific question and the student's level of preparation.

For educators, the key point is that Codex can serve as an interactive feedback tool. The agent doesn't just flag a syntax error; it explains why a particular approach doesn't work and offers alternatives. In programming, understanding the "why" matters more than memorizing syntax mechanically, and that is the bet OpenAI is making in educational scenarios.

Instructors also get new automation options: first-pass grading of assignments with an analysis of common mistakes, generation of exercises at different difficulty levels, and creation of interactive practical examples without hand-building every step.

ChatGPT Work in education

ChatGPT Work adds an organizational and management layer on top of ChatGPT's capabilities. Schools can create workspaces for specific courses, manage student access, and configure rules for interacting with AI depending on the assignment. This helps address one of the central problems of bringing ChatGPT into education: drawing the line between acceptable help and prohibited cheating.

The team format also opens up group project work. Several students can work with AI agents together in a shared space, while the instructor tracks the team's progress and steps in when needed.

What this means

OpenAI is steadily moving from a general-purpose chatbot toward specialized vertical products. After professional work environments, education is becoming the company's next systematic bet. The new plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex are a step toward the official integration of AI into the learning process, with attention to the real tasks of teachers and students: course structure, level of preparation, and the requirements of a particular discipline.
