Why rare diseases are hard to study

Each rare disease is described through unique features (a specific genetic mutation or set of symptoms) that are studied separately from others, which makes it almost impossible to spot shared mechanisms between diseases. The company believes AI helps model such diseases and find patterns across many of them at once, as well as synthesize insights from a large body of literature.

Why the Monarch Initiative matters

The program's early partner is the Monarch Initiative, an international consortium that improves diagnosis and the search for mechanisms behind rare diseases. Monarch develops the Mondo Disease Ontology — a computational system that unifies disease definitions from OMIM, Orphanet, ICD, and dozens of other sources — as well as the Monarch Knowledge Graph.

Monarch recently assembled a new "agent-friendly" library called DisMech: Claude reads clinical case reports, genetic variant databases, registry schemas, and raw open data, and points to mechanistic similarities between diseases at a speed previously unattainable. The consortium invites Anthropic's grantees to use these resources and add to them.
