What the money will go toward

Anthropic will direct 10 million Canadian dollars to research into beneficial and responsible applications of AI. Who will receive funding and why

Medical centers receive special focus. CHEO and its research institute are using Claude credits to evaluate AI approaches that improve treatment outcomes for children and adolescents. CAMH, through the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics, will build predictive models for treating mental disorders and conduct large-scale fairness audits of psychiatric AI systems. The credits will also help scale the CAMH Global Learning Academy — a multilingual AI education program in mental health.

Mila will also develop AI assistants to help scientists find and evaluate scientific breakthroughs. Université Laval will focus on how large language models behave in different cultural contexts, including Quebec French and Indigenous languages. University of Saskatchewan will apply Claude in biomedicine, food and water security, and quantum computing. The University of Toronto's data science institute will allocate funding among projects through scientific peer review.

Why Canada specifically

Canadian institutions played a key role in shaping modern AI. As Anthropic notes, during a period of widespread skepticism toward neural networks, the University of Toronto and the University of Montreal were among the few advancing the field, while researchers at the University of Alberta laid the foundations of reinforcement learning.

In the early 2010s, it was Canadian teams that showed that with the arrival of powerful computing — above all general-purpose GPUs — deep neural networks could operate at large scale. This launched the modern era of AI.
